Dad disputes the official records of his birth, so he always celebrated his birthday on April 30th. Dad was born in Indonesia and survived Japanese occupation during World War II and civil war in the 1960's. He immigrated to the United States with his wife and three children. Dad and his wife were both pathologists in Indonesia. Once in the U.S., he retrained at UTHSCSA to become an anesthesiologist and practiced his entire career in San Antonio. Dad was a father we looked up to, who taught by example rather than words.
Through him we understood the meaning of generosity, courage, sacrifice and love. In our youth we perceived him as our patriarch, but as we all grew older, he became a best-friend, and unlikely cheerleader, who eagerly involved himself in every part of our lives. From boy talk with his granddaughters to sharing memories and feelings, he became more than father, he became a treasured confidant. He was well-respected by his colleagues and loved by many patients.
Dad loved work as much as he loved his family and he retired after his 87th birthday, having practiced practicing medicine for over 60 years. He gave generously of his time and resources both inside and outside of the realm of Medicine. Dad was a voracious reader and always stayed abreast of new developments in anesthesiology. He also was very knowledgeable about politics, business and sports. He was an adventurous spirit who traveled around the world with three small children in tow. Dad was a very wise man that many people went to for advice. However, he was very humble and did not seek fame or credit.
We will miss his guidance and company but are thrilled that he is with Mom who he missed dearly.
He is survived by his sons: Dr. Thomas Oei and wife Joan, David Oei and wife Sue; his daughter, Mirah Ballard and husband Steven, grandchildren: Laura Oei, James Oei, Sara Ballard, Kimberly Oei, Cori Ballard and Coleman Oei.
