Henry R. Castro, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and proud San Antonian, entered into the loving arms of our Lord on November 12, 2025. He was born on April 26, 1927 to parents, Maria and Juan Castro in San Antonio, Texas.
Henry grew up helping in his father’s butcher shop and grocery store on Guadalupe Street, a place that shaped his work ethic and sense of community. Henry graduated from Lanier High School before answering the call to serve his country. His military career spanned across both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force.
He first enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 12, 1945, serving with the 78th Division Infantry in Berlin during World War II. He later reenlisted in 1948 and was deployed to Trieste, Italy during the tense early years of the Cold War, helping guard against advancing communist forces. After returning home, Henry continued his service through civil service work at Kelly and Brooks Air Force Bases, as well as several years in the Air Force Reserves. In 1967, he was recalled to active duty during the Vietnam War and the USS Pueblo crisis. Henry retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Master Sergeant on June 1, 1984.
Throughout his years of dedication, Henry was honored with numerous medals and ribbons, including:
• World War II Victory Medal
• Victory Ribbon
• Overseas Service Bar

Henry was a man of many passions. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, coaching youth sports, and spending weekends barbecuing. Some of his happiest moments were spent in his backyard, relaxing with his dog, a cold beer in hand, proudly watching his Dallas Cowboys. He believed strongly in keeping kids active and off the streets; as a CYO coach and later Athletic Director at St. John Berchmans Catholic Church, he guided countless young athletes through baseball, basketball, track, and football.
Above all, Henry was a family man. He shared 66 years, 10 months, and 20 days of marriage with his beloved wife, Louisa Navaira Castro, until her passing. His love for his family was steady, strong, and unwavering.
He will be reunited in heaven with his wife, Louisa Castro; parents, Maria and Juan Castro; brothers, Richard Castro, Juan Castro, David Castro and Robert Arsenega; and great-grandson, Christopher Castro.
Henry’s memory will forever live in the hearts of his sons, Henry Jr., wife Teresa and Jacob, wife Virginia; 7 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Henry leaves behind a legacy rooted in service, commitment, and love, a life lived with purpose, humor, and heart.
