

Henry Meyer Holloway, of San Antonio, TX, passed away peacefully on Friday May 3rd, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.Born on February 28, 1929, in Hondo, TX, Henry was the 3rd son of Leslie Holloway and Nettie (Woolls) Holloway. After graduating from Hondo High School, he received 2 degrees from Southwestern University, a Bachelor of Music Education in 1950 and Bachelor of Arts in Religious Education in 1951. He served as a combat engineer and chaplain’s assistant in the US Army from 1952-1954. Following his honorable discharge, Henry entered Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University, graduating with a Master of Divinity in 1956. He then moved to New York to attend Union Theological Seminary and The Juilliard School, receiving a Master of Sacred Music in 1958.
In 1958, Henry started as Director of Music at Laurel Heights United Methodist Church in San Antonio, a position he would hold until his retirement in 1998. Henry was also a co-founder of the San Antonio Choral Society and served as their conductor from 1965-1980. For 10 years, he also served as Director of Music for the Southwest Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church.
During his 40 years at Laurel Heights, Henry established a number of traditions and inspired countless people with his love of and ministry through music. His first year at Laurel Heights, inspired by the tradition at Kings College, Cambridge University, Henry established the Festival of 9 Lessons and Carols, which continues every year at Christmas. Hundreds of High Schoolers found confidence and friendship producing the summer Youth Choir Show and traveled across the United States during annual choir trips.In 1975, Henry founded the Laurel Heights Super Adult Program, a ministry to senior adults. The organization grew to more than 600 active senior members and is still a thriving mission of Laurel Heights today.
It was also at Laurel Heights that Henry met and married Susan Bruner, his wife of more than 56 years. They raised a family, traveled the world, and rarely spent a day apart.
Henry is survived by Susan, their son Stephen and his wife Carrie, daughter Jennifer and her husband Steve, and grandchildren Isabella, James, Sarah, and Henry.
