

He graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1952. In 1955, he married Doris Knudsen, his sweetheart from 8th grade. He earned his MBA degree from Cornell University in 1957.
Henry joined Revere Copper and Brass Rome Division in June 1957 and was made Division Controller in 1966. In 1970, he moved to the Corporate headquarters as manager of Budgets and Cost Control. In 1974, he was made Corporate Controller and in 1976, Vice President. In 1985, he was made Vice President and CFO of Revere Copper Products until 1988. From 1988 to 1992, he served as Vice President of Finance and Administration of Gaylord Brothers of Syracuse, NY, along with other business interests. He was a Director of Oneida County Savings Bank, ONBank of Syracuse and M & T Bank of Buffalo, NY with total service spanning four decades.
Community activities include seven years on the Rome Hospital Board of Managers, two as president, and many years on the boards of the Fort Stanwix and Hiawatha Councils, Boy Scouts of America. He was Executive Director of the Syracuse Area Business Development Center for two years following retirement.
He was a lifelong member of BPO Elks and Institute of Management Accountants. He was a member of St. Mary's Church, Clayton, NY, and Holy Spirit Catholic Church in San Antonio, TX.
He and his wife relocated to San Antonio in 1999 from Syracuse, NY, but continued to maintain their summer home since 1971 in Clayton, NY.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Rex Lazzara. He is survived by his wife, Doris Lavarnway; children, Henry G. Lavarnway, III of San Antonio, Karen Ross and her husband Dr. Robert Ross of San Antonio, and Nancy Lazzara of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Kyle Lavarnway, David and Daniel Ross; sister, Kathryn Gifford of Pilot Mountain, NC; and sister-in-law, Jacquelyn Baynes of Rome, NY.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 26, 2012, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
