It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Hortencia G. Rangel, who departed this life on January 8, 2025 at the age of 97. Born in Sabinas, Coahuila, Mexico on September 20, 1927, she lived a life filled with devotion, love, and selflessness that inspired all who knew her.
Mom's life was defined by her unshakable faith in God, her unwavering commitment to her family, and her profound dedication to helping others. Widowed in 1972, she faced the daunting task of raising eight of ten children, whom were still at home. With remarkable strength and resilience, she clothed, fed, and guided us, ensuring that her love and values were the bedrock of our upbringing.
She spent 25 years working as a cook, serving nuns at the Missionary Servants of St. Anthony and priests at Padua Place, a retirement home. Many of whom became her friends throughout her service. On weekends, she extended her kindness to the less fortunate, feeding the poor in the neighborhood with produce generously donated by a local Farmer’s Market. Her compassion and generosity knew no bounds.
Later in life, she devoted herself to caring for the elderly, a heartfelt mission inspired by the loss of her own parents, who passed away two weeks apart. She found joy and purpose in providing comfort and care to others in their golden years.
Mom’s home was a sanctuary of love and warmth, especially during the holidays when children, grandchildren, and even strangers gathered. She delighted in serving others and was happiest when surrounded by the laughter and love of family. Her simple, humble life was a testament to the power of faith and devotion, particularly to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Virgin Mary.
One of her quirks was pretending to be allergic to flowers, making exaggerated gestures of sneezing and a runny nose when we gifted them to her. In truth, she disliked the idea of us spending money on her. Yet, those flowers always found their way to her special table beneath the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Mom leaves behind a legacy of love in her children: Mercedes Gallegos, Henry Joe Rangel, Robert Rangel, Oscar Rangel, Roy Rangel, Arthur Rangel, Raul Rangel, and Leticia White. She is preceded in death by her husband, Rogelio L. Rangel; her daughter, Ninfa Alicia Guerrero and son Edward Rangel; as well as grandson, Steven Guerrero and several siblings who resided in Mexico and California. She also leaves behind a host of cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mom will forever be remembered for her unwavering faith, her deep love for her family, and her generous, caring spirit. Her courage and resilience have left an indelible mark on all of us, and her memory will continue to guide and inspire us.
The family wishes to express its gratitude to Ms. Mireya Ibarra for her caregiving service to our mother.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, January 20, 2025, at Porter Loring Mortuary.
