

Howard Thomas Cain, Jr. age 86, passed away in San Antonio, Texas. Howard was born July 1, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Arlene Patricia Cain; sisters, Marjorie Boddy and Patricia Mikolas. He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Carol Anne Cain; daughters, Nancy Sickafoose (Keith) and Alice Chavez (Carlos); six grandchildren, Emily Drake (Mason), Andrew and Matthew Sickafoose, Rebecca, Jacqueline, and Rachel Chavez; and three great grandchildren, Collin, Sophia and Ethan Drake. Howard entered the U.S. Army in 1943, serving 36 years. He subsequently served 12 yrs in the Texas National Guard. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason Shriner and a Past Patron of the Eastern Star. He was a teacher at Morehead Elementary School and at Irvin High School in El Paso, Texas. He was an instructor at the El Paso Community College and a consultant for Black American studies at the University of Texas, Austin. He mentored at Bowden and Cameron Elementary schools, San Antonio, TX. Howard entered Federal Civil Service in 1981 retiring in 2001 after more than 20 years from Department of Medical Science, Academy of Health Science/Army Medical Department Center and School, Fort Sam Houston, TX. During Howard’s military career as a medic, he had many interesting experiences as he met or provided care for Winston Churchill, General Eisenhower, General Patton, General Bradley, Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, Eleanor Roosevelt and Mickey Rooney to name a few. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to The American Lung Association, 1301 Pennsylvania Ave. N. W. #800, Washington D. C. 20004, www. lungusa.org, or the charity of your choice. Funeral service will be held Friday, Oct 7, 2011 at 10:30am at Sunset Funeral Chapel, with visitation to be one hour prior to service. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
