CSM Harrell was not only a leader, but a good friend who propelled my career and challenged me by competing for the AHS and then HSC NCO of the Years 1980 and 1981; which I won due in part to the challenge set forth by CSM Harrell by having me work in the Military Science Division with SFC Hank Fairchild. I was with the Army Advanced NCO Course in 1983.  In a class just before going to Camp Bullis, he came to me to let me know he liked my class.  He inspired all that knew him. I just found about CSM Harrells' passing. I am so sorry. CSM Harrell was my CSM at 3rd Med Bn in Germany in 1977. I was stationed at Ft Knox, Ky for  a few years and he had me transferred to Academy of Health Sciences in 1981. I was a instructor in the Military Science Branch. Our brother, Howard R. Harrell, passed away on October 3, 2015.  Howard was a great big brother to Rex, setting an example for behavior and demonstrating a strong work ethic.  He was a steadfast man...a man you could count on whether it was a buddy in the army, or our son, Gordon, calling him to ask his advice.  I think he and Shirley attended every family wedding, starting with ours in 1961, and then, attending Leslie and Keith's, and later Gordon and Amanda's.  His military funeral was wonderful and fitting for a man of his caliber.

Uncle Howard was a humble, great man and a true American hero. Our sadness is is kept at bay knowing that he has gone home and will be with his beloved Shirley.

Thinking of my family, and my Uncle Howard. He always had a good smile and a big hug.  Wishing all of his children peace.

CSM Harrell was a great leader and I had the honor of working for him at the 7th Army NCO Academy as his operations Sgt. His wisdom and leadership helped me immensely while in the Army and after. He was my friend and he will be missed

Karen, Dennis, Charles and family we are saddened by the loss of an outstanding NCO, leader, husband, father, brother and friend and mentor to so many of us who served under him. I feel privileged to have served under Howard at both AHS and HQ, HSC and continued our friendship over the years as retired soldiers. The notice of his passing was posted on our AREVP Facebook page and many of our group have made some exceptional comments for an exceptional NCO. May he rest in peace and rejoin with Shirley Ann in God's kingdom. Our prayers to the family.

I know only through the words of his wonderful daughter, Karen, that he was a good and caring man who loved his country and his family and friends.  Although we have lost a true asset to this world, he is home in heaven with his wife and those who have gone before.  I'm sure Jesus has a great position for him there and I look forward to meeting him on the other side.  God's strength, comfort and love to you and your family Karen.
