Ivan Lee Cameron was born in Hollywood, California on January 4, 1934. He passed on to his Reward in San Antonio, Texas on April 29, 2023. Ivan lived an amazing life and leaves a legacy of loving family.
Early on, Ivan excelled in athletics, was president of his senior class, and was an Eagle Scout. He attended college at the University of Redlands where he studied biology, played basketball, and ran track. Most importantly, it was there he met his soulmate and the love of his life, Loralee Litchfield. They wed three years later and were married for 67 years. Ivan and Loree settled in Los Angeles to start their family.
Ivan earned his master's degree at the University of Southern California, followed by his PhD in anatomy at the University of California Los Angeles. He was a scientist at heart, loved research, and authored approximately 300 scientific publications in his illustrious career.
Dr. Cameron was one of the founding fathers of the medical school and an honored professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where he taught anatomy and cell biology. He also founded and served as president of the International Cell Biology Society, where many of his research fellows became lifetime friends. Additionally, Ivan founded the San Antonio chapter of the Sierra Club, in which he served as president for several years, and helped to establish the Shavano Park Police Department.
Ivan and his beloved wife, Loree, loved to travel and were avid outdoors adventurers; they loved camping, canoeing, hiking, and fishing together. Ivan's favorite things included the outdoors, sunshine, God, his work, beer and tequila, grilling spareribs, and the Spurs.
He was known by all as brilliant, passionate, generous, handsome, humble, and loyal. "Doc" had a great sense of humor; he told some of the worst jokes ever, yet he would always laugh the loudest and had a smile that always lit up the room. Every day was a gift for Ivan and he lived each to the fullest.
More than anything, he loved his family fiercely. He leaves behind his dear wife, Loree, his three daughters and sons-in-law: Kathleen Banse (Gary), Sabrina Butler (Terry), and Colleen Miller (Gary). He never parted without a hug and an "l love you".
Ivan and Loree have six adoring grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, with two more on the way.
He passed quickly, outside, enjoying the sun with his wife, grandchildren, and great grandchildren playing nearby.
The family will have a private service, likely followed by beer, ribs, and a Spurs game.
Rest in peace Ivan, we love you forever, cheers!
