

J. Thomas Kirby went home to the Lord on Friday, November 21, 2014. He is survived by 3 biological children: sons, Frank daughter, Dana; daughter-in-law, Gigi; grandsons, Aaron, Brandon, and Garrett; granddaughter, Lauren; brothers, Warren and Frederick; sisters, Ramona, Louella, and Frieda; and companion, Shirley Jeffery. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Dorothy, and his grandson, Augie Vogeler. One of his great pleasures was being called Grandpa by many friends & Godchildren, including the Maria Venegas family, the Gennye Duncan family, the Barney Mora family and the Sanchez Family.
Tom was born in Modena, MO in 1927. He received a BS degree from the University of Missouri and an MA degree from George Williams College. He was in the Army from 1945-1947. After the war, he worked at several branches of the St. Louis YMCA, including the Inner City Y located in the ghetto. Tom became the Executive Director of the San Antonio YMCA in 1969. He later joined his son Frank as a co-owner of Rainbow Gardens. Tom reflected his strong Christian values in each of his occupations by always giving generously of his time and service. He always felt his purpose in life was helping others.
