Jack M. DeLong

Jack M. Delong, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and all around good neighbor and friend to all, passed into glory on August 8, 2010. Jack joined his wife Elaine, who after 63 years of marriage passed away in July of this year. He is survived by daughter Gayle DeLong Powne and husband Ron, and son Richard K. DeLong and wife Judy; along with 4 grandchildren: Tom DeLong and wife Nicole, Chris DeLong and wife Kelly, Cassie Powne Hamelman and husband BJ, Carly Powne; and 3 great grandsons Will Hamelman, Clayton DeLong, Wesley Hamelman; brother George F. DeLong; sisters Ava Nell Cheatham, Marilyn Evans, Janice Cobb; sister-cousin Baby Doll Shook; and a host of other relatives and friends. Born in Luling, Texas on June 6, 1924, he lived most of his life in San Antonio. After serving in WWII he returned to San Antonio and worked his entire career with Southern Pacific Railroad. After many years with the railroad he retired and enjoyed his final years traveling, being with family, and spending time at Lake LBJ. As an active member of our community, Jack was a charter member of Hope Presbyterian Church and later became a member of John Calvin Presbyterian Church. He was also active with the San Antonio Airport Ambassadors, North Star Mall Walkers, and Southern Pacific Retirees.

The family will receive visitors from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Sunday, August 15 at Sunset Funeral Home. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at John Calvin Presbyterian Church at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 16th with a reception to follow in the Church Hall. Jack will be rejoined with Elaine at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in a private service. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked donations be made in memory to John Calvin Presbyterian Church. Jack will be missed by his family and many personal friends. Our community has lost not just a wonderful man, but an example of a caring person and great neighbor.
