

Dr. James Q. Barnes, 100 years young, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 3, 2022, in San Antonio, Texas, leaving his legacy of joy, kindness, and love. James was born in Santa Anna, Texas on October 2, 1921, to Leola Christie and William F. Barnes.
Jim went to Santa Anna High School, home of the Mighty Mountaineers where his love of tennis began. He completed his Batchelor's degree at The University of Texas at Austin. He went on to complete his Doctoral degree in Dentistry at The University of Texas Dental School at Houston where he was a member of the Xi Psi Phi Fraternity. Jim went on to complete his degree in Pediatric Dentistry at The Forsythe Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts and subsequently served at a Childrens Home in Waco, Texas. He continued his postgraduate education completing a degree in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at The University of Washington School of Dentistry. After he opened his Orthodontic practice in San Antonio, Texas, Jim served as President of the San Antonio District Dental Society in which he had a lifetime membership. He shared his expertise teaching Orthodontics at The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, earning the affection and respect of colleagues and students. He was a lifetime member of the Texas Dental Association and received the honor of being inducted as a Fellow of The American College of Dentistry. He was also a Lifetime member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontists, and the Tweed International Foundation of orthodontics.
Jim served honorably in the United States Air Force during the Korean war. After he finished his tour, he carried with him a strong lifetime spirit of patriotism and respect for military service. Jim loved playing tennis and was a fierce competitor and trophy winner of numerous tennis tournaments. Most notable was his Gold Medal in the Senior Olympics.
Jim was married to Lupita Magnon Barnes for 61 years. They were inseparable and completely devoted to each other, each often referring to the other as "my buddy". He was a committed Christian who loved the Lord and lived his faith in every aspect of his life. He was a Life Deacon at Trinity Baptist Church where he endeared himself to deacons and members who frequently expressed their delight at seeing he and the love of his life, Lupita, holding hands Sunday after Sunday. He will be remembered as a deeply devoted and loving husband, father, and friend, and his kind and gentle soul.
The family is grateful for the professional, tender care he received during the last months of his life at The Estates at Shavano.
Jim experienced the loss of many loved ones and family members during his 100 years including his parents, siblings, extended family, and friends. He is survived by his children: Marilu Garza, James Quincy Barnes, Jr. (partner Laurel Stuckey), and Dr. Glory Barnes Marshall (Col Stephen Marshall); three grandchildren: Melisa Olsen (Andrew), Mamie Kathryn Horton (Cameron), and 2Lt James Bailey Marshall, and many nieces and nephews. He also had the joy of being introduced to his great grandchildren: Summer Lila Whitney Olsen, Luke Christian Olsen, and Hallie James Horton.
A celebration of Jims life will be lead by Pastor Leslie Hollon at Trinity Baptist Church, 319 E Mulberry in San Antonio on Saturday April 2 at 11:00 a.m. A private interment with military honors will be attended by family on Friday April 1 at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Trinity Baptist Church.
