James Edward Carroll passed away on January 5th, 2017 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on August 6th, 1953 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Gene and Betty Carroll. James and Susannah Schaefer Carroll met at the University of Texas, married on October 6th, 1979 in San Antonio, and lived in Houston for many years before moving to San Antonio.
James touched the lives of many people with his kind and generous heart and his many acts of kindness to family, friends, and strangers alike. He had a quick wit, fabulous sense of humor, and a keen mind for business, music, hunting, history, and literature. James was an amazing person that remembered most everything he read or heard, which made him a wonderful storyteller and great conversationalist. James was a real estate professional who worked on development, construction, and management of many projects in Texas, but most recently worked in real estate development for the Schaefer Companies in San Antonio.
James was an avid hunter having hunted Africa, Montana, Wyoming, and on his family's ranch in South Texas. He was a skilled hunting guide, a warm friend, and a thoughtful host. He had a heart of gold and will never be forgotten. His passing leaves family and friends heartbroken, but we celebrate and rejoice in the countless wonderful memories of him.
James' wife, Susannah, was the love of his life followed closely by his beloved daughter Catherine Jane Carroll Landis, her husband, Patrick Michael Landis; and his grandchildren, William Schaefer Landis and Margaret Grace Landis. James is predeceased by Susannah's parents, John M. Schaefer and Nancy Hardee Schaefer of San Antonio. He is also survived by his parents, Gene and Betty Carroll; his sisters, and their husbands: Sally and Neal Cukerbaum, Ann and Barry Hunsworth, and Nancy and Rocky Letsos; Susannah's sister, Jane Schaefer, and her husband, Tony Eugenio; Susannah's brother, Sam Schaefer; and all his loving nieces and nephews.
