During WWII, Lt. Carter was a US Army Air Corps pilot and instructor for the P-38 "Black Widow" night fighter. A cherished memory for him was having his visiting maternal grandfather see him riding the lead horse in the 1935 San Antonio Battle of Flowers Parade as Lt. Col. and ranking officer of the Central Catholic High School ROTC.
An avid bowler who frequently won tournaments, he enjoyed relating how he once scored a perfect 300 game with rented shoes and an alley ball.
His last residence in San Antonio was in Windcrest, where he played golf at Windcrest Golf Club and garnered seven holes-in-one. In 1939 at age 21, Dr. Carter was the youngest person in Texas to qualify for his D.O. license. He was an optometrist for Texas State Optical for many years.
He was a good father and a loving husband.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy, and six children; Jean Carter, Catherine husband Bill Haley, Margaret husband John Millice, Fredric Carter wife Deborah, Thomas Carter, all of San Antonio; and Sally husband Ken Burnham of Providence, Rhode Island. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren, Brooke and Sam Haley; Ben and David Millice; Katie Millice Schumacher; and Kristina and Ashley Carter.
Special thanks to the staff from Odyssey Hospice for the loving care they have provided over the past few weeks.
