

LTC James T. Finch, a devoted husband, loving father, proud veteran, and dedicated servant to his country and community, passed away on December 1, 2025, in San Antonio, TX. He was born on March 9, 1934, in Luling, TX, to C.O. Finch and Helen Northcut.
James distinguished himself early in life as a standout athlete, excelling in football at Pasadena High School, Warden County Junior College, and the University of Wyoming. He was a member of the remarkable 1956 University of Wyoming football team, which was later inducted into the university’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001—an honor that stood as a testament to his commitment, discipline, and leadership.
He went on to build a distinguished career as a Combat Infantry Officer in the United States Army. Throughout his service, James earned numerous awards and commendations, including the Silver Star for gallantry in action in the Republic of South Vietnam. He retired from the U.S. Army as a respected leader and continued to shape future generations through his work as a JROTC instructor in Los Angeles, CA.
After moving to San Antonio in 1992, James continued his lifelong dedication to service by volunteering extensively at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC). He served as president of the BAMC Retiree Activities Group from 2000 to 2001 and received the Department of the Army Commander’s Award for Public Service for his tireless efforts. He also contributed many years of leadership as an executive board member of the San Antonio Retired Officers Association.
Above all his accomplishments, James was most proud of his family. He is survived by his two sons: James R., with his wife Christine, and Christopher, with his wife Julie. James is also survived by his sister, Helen Powell, her husband Milton, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
James is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 35 years, Lila Jean Finch, his daughter Kelly Ann and grandson Nicholas.
His legacy of strength, service, integrity, and love will continue through all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Visitation will be held on Monday, January 05, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary North, 2102 N. Loop 1604 E.
A Funeral service take place on Tuesday, January 06, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
Interment with military honors will immediately follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd.
