Like so many MHS?ers, Tex is our hero?and especially the guys who were lucky enough to play sports with him. Smooth Hands Luke! Yes, he had the softest touch with either a football or basketball. I remember when I first saw him playing end for the football team. The ball was thrown-up and there was no way that anyone was going to catch that ball. And then, these sky-hoop arms reached up into the sky to caress the ball like a mother holding a child?pure poetry, he was our guy. He was that way in life?caressing his friends, and all those that knew and wanted to know him. If you knew him as Tex or Jim was not important, he made us all feel good. While we?ll miss you at the MHS reunions, Your Spirit and Inspiration will always be with us. Thanks for the many memories?You are with Us.

Jim played a great part in my life and catapulted me into action. He will never be forgotten.

The real tribute to a person is not what they do for themselves, but what they do for others. Tex left his mark on all of our hearts by giving us his friendship. As part of the MHS family for over 45 years, he was cherished as a brother. We will miss him!

We'll miss you Tex. Carla and family, my husband Chris and I were lucky to hang out with Tex at the last reunion. He told a million stories, some amusing and some touching. He struck us as a man very comfortable in his own skin. He acknowledged how fortunate he was to have you in his life Carla and I know his absence will hurt. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and yours.

Tex was an icon of our class of "62" at MHS. I was very fortunate to have spent some time with him in Las Vegas this past February. It was great spending time with him reliving the "good old days" while betting the horses at Ceasar's. Its hard to believe that he's now gone. 
When we think of our days in Madrid, there are things we'll never forget: Sangria, Spanish Taxis, 6 peseta wine, elevators that smelled like Spanish cigarettes, the Select, La Cabana, cuba libras, the teen club, Royal Oaks, the Glass House, the Generalisimo, the Gran Via and Tex Matthews. Tex was our "class jock" but more than that, he was everybody's friend. Tex, I will miss you. May you rest in peace old buddy.

As I type this, my heart is with a crowd of friends and family celebrating Tex's life at a restaurant in San Antonio. He's surely dancing just one more Flamenco for the MHS family, sipping a brandy with Johnny, sharing a story with Billie, and realizing he no longer needs to call ahead for a tee time. It's all a walk-on now! He was the greatest at that in life! We'll miss his messages to coordinate 'minis' here and there, whereever. Too late for many of us, meeting Carla as we have brings her into the MHS family as if she'd been there all along. We love you and how much you and Tex loved one another. May he rest in peace and may you, Carla, know that a huge family holds you dear to their hearts. Fondly, Patti

It has been a long ride my friend, you, Charlie and I have been best buddies from the old days in Amarillo. You were a star then and being around you for so many years, knowing you and your family has been a highlight of our lives; your light will always shine in our hearts. 
 It was a sad day when you moved to Spain, but it was a sadder day when we all said ?goodbye? a few weeks ago. Those few days then and our get-together at my house last summer will be a special remembrance for a special person. Jim, you have so many friends who care for you. We all love you, Carla and your family. Give your mom Big Momma and Bill a big bear hug from me and tell Uncle Sun I need to talk to him.

You are and always will be remembered! You were a friendly face in a crowd, a friend to all, and always a role model for us all. You had charisma and you used it in all the right ways. You will be remembered and I know that you will continue your good work in the next phase of your journey!

My heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy to you all on Tex's untimely passing. I count myself lucky to have shared time in Spain with Tex, both as a teenager and again in Madrid in 2004. His humor, his laughter, and presence, were gifts he gave freely and always without hesitation. Now that we can only hold him in our hearts the edge of where he used to be is sad and hurt-filled. But his memories are bright and his gifts were so many, that I pray they will outshine in time your terrible loss and grief.

My Grandfather, "Big Daddy", was a great man in my opinion. He was an excellent basketball player and I want to do my best to live up to the skill he had. I also very much enjoyed the time that I had with him, while visiting each summer vacation. I had been looking forward to practising basketball with him this summer! But, unfortunately, that will not happen now.

My most vivid memory of Tex was on the basketball court as he took passes from Johnny and winged in those patented flat-trajectory jump shots of his. We loved it when he, Johnny, and the others on the team made it work and took it to the opponents. Tex gave the impression of a rough and tumble guy but that masked the kindness and strength of character I saw him display consistently during our years in Madrid and again at the many reunions we were privileged to share with him. Tex, his Mom -- Mrs. Matthews -- and Johnny epitomize many of the good things I remember about our wonderful Madrid community. Our reunions will not be the same without these three unique and memorable people. Tex, save places for the rest of us at the reunion you are sure to be having with your Mom and Johnny. We'll see you again for another reunion.

Tex will not only be remembered by this fellow classmate for his athletic endeavors, but for his strength of character, genuiness, wit and sencerity. Already dearly missed, a true original, his lost will be especially felt at our Madrid/Torrejon High reunions. Thank you for touching my life, and being a true friend.

We live our lives day to day and over the years we meet a lot of people. Some are just passing strangers and others make a mark on us for life. Jim was that kind of man that left a mark. He savored everyday. He squeezed everything out of life that he could get and he took me along for that short ride. But I'm thankful for the short time I had with Jim. I'll take a lot more time to watch the sun come up in the mornings, I'll hug my wife a lot more than usual, and I'll be thankful for the time I have each day. Thanks Jim for the beautiful memories. To Carla and all of Tex's family: I cannot imagine what a huge gap exists in your world without Tex. But who can have any regrets that Tex didn't live life to the fullest. He was a bigger-than-life character......and sweeter than honey to boot. Carla, Tex gushed about his love for you when we were in Madrid for a mini reunion 3 years ago. I think the party has started wherever Tex, Johnny and Mrs. Matthews exist today.....and I like to think they are part of the molecules that surround all of us every day. We must celebrate him, not mourn him as he wished.

Without this wonderful man in our lives many of us would not have been able to renew our "wonderful friendships". Way back in 1976 "Tex Matthews and Gayle Zigrang" contacted some of us about a possible reunion in San Antonio, thus the very first Madrid Knight Reunion was held that year! We have continued to grow closer every year. Thank you "Tex" for those wonderful years! You were our and will continue to be "our brother"! Thanks you Carla for sharing Tex with us! God Bless!

Tex Matthews was the kind of person who represented what was right and good with America. He was a man of character Although he would probably counsel me to leave off the "man of" part; as well as a warm and sincere friend to all of us who were privileged to have known him. When we of a certain place and time cast back our memories to those golden years of our lives in Iberia, Tex Matthews stands so very prominently among the dramatis personae inhabiting the pantheon of our youth which now, it saddens me to say, exists only in our shared consciousness and fading memories. You were one hell of a good guy, Tex, and you left us much too soon.

Sleep well fine prince. I will cherish sweet memories of you until I leave this earth. Look down and take care of those of us who miss you so and I hope that you are in paradise.

Tex was a dear MHS friend for 46 years. He will be missed by all. He was a very special person, as you well know. He loved you so much, Carla. My heart aches for you and your family as well as all of his friends. God has taken a wonderful person from us but as we know there was a plan and he is at peace.

Dear Carla and all of Tex's family, Whenever I think of Madrid High School, Tex invariably comes to mind. He was an upperclassman, so on an elevated plane to begin with, but when you added his wonderful personality, charm, wit, humor, great dancing and lanky self to the mix, he WAS "Mister MHS". If not for Tex and Johnny who, along with Mrs. Matthews, are no doubt already planning El Reuneon Ultimo even now, many of us would have missed out on the wonderful reunions we have had over the last twenty years or so - rekindling old friendships and adding to our stores of memories. Tex your Jim leaves a huge hole in the world for all of us who were fortunate enough to know him. I am grateful his pain and illness are at an end, but mostly I'm grateful for the tremendous pleasure of knowing him all these years. Sam MHS '64

Our heart goes out to Jim, better know to us as Jaime. He was a great guy, full of life and caring. Jaime always had a smile on his face, like he could see inside you and pull the laughter and good feelings right out of you. We hope that he is at peace with life and himself. To his family, Jim/ Tex has always been known as Big Daddy... the oldest brother to 4 of Matthews kids ,he was truly our hero, the one we went to for advise, the one who lead our family, our Father figure. He walked me down the aisle when I married... 
He was the sweetest and most kind spirited person you would ever want to meet Always full of laugher and such a cut up, he was always the center of attention whether it was his Elvis impersonation the quivering lip and all! or asking his children, Grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews, " What's your favorite Carnnnnntoon?...and double up his fist to pretend it was a microphone and put it in their face. Carnnnntoon is not a typo, it was the way he said it... We all died laughing when he was silly like that, he would even crack himself up! He probably hates that I told that one! Jim loved his sweet wife Carla, and his family with passion and he always held a special love for his MHS classmates. 
If you were a friend, you were a friend for life; Big Daddy always lived life to the fullest. Now, he is in the arms of God, don?t you know my Mom, Dad and Johnny Roberts are fighting to see who gets his time. I know he is at peace. I am proud of the way he conducted himself, with such dignity, and bravery. It was a tough road for him and all of us. I loved him dearly, and my heart is truly forever broken.
