

James “Jim” Michael Hicks, age, 76, peacefully passed away on February 2, 2021, at his home in San Antonio with his loving wife of 28 years, Valerie, by his side. Jim was born on March 1, 1944 in San Antonio, to Thurman Garner Hicks and Ruth Romans Hicks.
Jim was a 1962 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, where he was a member of the Mustang Band. Following graduation from high school Jim enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, honorably serving his country from 1962 through 1965, attaining the rank of Corporal. While in the Corps, Jim earned his Rifle Marksman Badge.
Following his time in the Marines, Jim held a variety of different occupations, including several years driving a rig as a trucker.
Jim and Valerie were married in 1992, residing in the Hill Country near Blanco for 23 years before moving back to San Antonio, where they have lived together for the last 5 years.
An outwardly friendly man, Jim never met a stranger, as he easily befriended people who he just met. After retirement he enjoyed fishing, working in the garden, and telling stories. Jim was always good with telling a tale or two . As he got older, he loved to sit on the front porch and watch the day go by. Jim always enjoyed family gatherings, and he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, who affecti
onately called him Papa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister Betty Jo Hicks.
He is survived by his wife, Valerie Ullrich Hicks; his children Sara Hicks, David Hicks and adopted son Alex Hicks; Step-Daughter Gina Bellinger and her Husband John, Step-Daughter Lisa Polansky and her husband Mark; Grandchildren Jack Bellinger, Lauren Bellinger, Caitlyn Polansky, and Zachary Polansky.
