Jim was born October 24, 1934, in Victoria, Texas to Kathryn and J. D. Hollan. Jim was raised on a cattle ranch in Sinton, Texas. He majored in Animal Husbandry at Texas A & M University thinking he would follow in his father's footsteps when suddenly, he got a change of heart and joined the Army. He served in Germany, Viet Nam and Thailand. While in Viet Nam he flew 884 combat missions supporting the Special Forces. He received the Air Medal with 16 Clusters, two Commendation Medals and one Purple Heart. Upon returning to the United States, he was Aviation Commander for the 6th Artillery Group at Fort Bliss.
Jim then retired from the Army as they were about to send him to Viet Nam for the 3rd time and he said he wouldn't make it out alive. He was recruited by El Paso Natural Gas Company, stayed 15 yrs then got an offer he couldn't refuse to open the Flight Department at USAA Insurance Company where he retired at 65 yrs old. He was then recruited by GE Simuflite in Dallas to teach. Then came along Bishop T. D. Jakes so Jim gladly accepted the position as Chief Pilot to head his flight department. Jim and Bishop had great times together flying all over the world. What a wonderful life Jim enjoyed during his flying career. He missed it dearly when he retired.
