

American Board of Ophthalmology, died Tuesday, October 24, 1995.
He was born in Austin, Texas to James L. Mims and Evelyn Hornsby Mims on May 21, 1920.
He graduated from Paschal High School in Ft. Worth, Texas in 1937 and graduated from U.T.M.B., Class of 1943. Dr. Mims served his internship at Wichita Falls Clinic-Hospital from 1943-1944, and was a Captain in the U.S. Army from 1944-1946.
He was Preceptor in Ophthalmology in San Antonio, Texas from 1946-1948 and served his residency at New Orleans E.E.N.T. Hospital and Tulane Ophthalmology Service from 1948-1950. He took the basic course in Ophthalmology at Tulane School of Graduate Medicine, 1948-1949 and was then certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1951. He was in the private practice of Ophthalmology from 1950 until the time of his death in 1995, and was associated in practice with Dr. Harrison N. Bowes, Jr. Dr. Mims was a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, was a Former Chief of the Robert B. Green Ophthalmology Residency Program, and was Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Texas School of Medicine in San Antonio.
He was Past President and first President of the San Antonio Society of Ophthalmology, and was also Past President of the Texas Ophthalmology Society.
He was a member of the Bexar County Medical Society, the Texas Medical Association, the A.M.A., and was former Chief of the Department of Ophthalmology of the Baptist Memorial Hospital System. Dr. Mims helped found the San Antonio Eye Bank.
He was a member of the Alamo Kiwanis Club and a founding member of the San Antonio Power Squadron and the Lake Canyon Yacht Club. He was first President of the Paradise Point Land Owners Association, where his lake home was located.
He was a dedicated family man, whose hobbies included photography, boating, horticulture, viniculture and metalcraft, and in his later years, he became very knowledgeable in computers.
He was survived by his wife, Mary Charline McGehee Mims, B.A., M.S., retired Professor of Microbiology at San Antonio College; three sons, James L. Mims III, M.D. and his wife, Martha, Charles L. Mims, B.A. and his wife, Emily and Robert L. Mims, M.D.; five grandchildren, Julie Coombs, Lisa Mims, Christopher J. Mims, Charles W. Mims and Brian J. Mims; brother, Hornsby Mims and his wife, Adele.
Pallbearers were: Dr. James L. Mims III, Charles L. Mims, Dr. Robert L. Mims, Billy Mims, Christopher Mims, Brian Mims, Dr. Harrison Bowes and William Gregg. Honorary pallbearers were: Dr. Jack Lee and David Garrett.
