James, or better known to his family as Jimbo, graduated in 1996 with his Bachelor of Science from the University of Texas at San Antonio. He remained a loyal UTSA alumnus and attended many Roadrunner tailgates and football games. He was also fortunate to travel to Chicago Cubs games and even has a brick at Wrigley field. Whether it was coaching Kindergarten CYO soccer games or volunteering with the booster club at Antonian College Preparatory, James was very involved with his boys’ sports teams growing up.
After losing his leg to cancer, James was connected to the San Antonio Amputee Foundation where he found community. SAAF gave James the opportunity to be active at support groups, attend conferences and participate in social outings. He also became a mentor to other amputees in San Antonio. James’ attitude towards his amputation, and his cancer fight in general, was something to be admired. He handled his situation with grace and liked to joke that he only had the amputation “for the parking.”
James is preceded in death by his father James T. Mitchell. He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Melissa Mitchell; son, James Mitchell; stepson, Taylor Gambill; mother, Barbara June Mitchell; sister, Julia Flinn; and her husband, Michael Flinn, as well as his beloved dogs, Dutch Carl and Saint. James is also survived by his nephew and nieces: Geoffrey, Mary Elizabeth, Juliana, Kady, Michaela as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins in Alabama and Illinois.
James will be greatly missed but never forgotten. He will be remembered by the many lives he touched, and we will honor his memory whenever we watch the Chicago Cubs, tailgate with the Roadrunners, eat BBQ, or go camping on Memorial Day.
