Jim Montgomery, a devoted and loving husband, father, Papa, and friend passed away at 77 on Sunday, August 14, 2022. He is remembered by many as a strong, joyful, caring, and Godly man. He had a huge heart for family and friends and a roaring laugh. He always wanted to give a helping hand and he had a true servants heart, whether it was for his country, his family, or his friends.
Jim was born on February 20, 1945, in Clarion, Pennsylvania, to parents, James Douglas Montgomery and Mary Alice Carnahan Montgomery. Although born in Pennsylvania, Jim grew up with his younger brother Greg and parents in Walled Lake, Michigan. He graduated high school at Walled Lake High School in Walled Lake, Michigan. Jim went to college at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, NM, where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering and a Masters degree in Environmental Engineering. While there, on June 3, 1968, he met the love of his life Marcia Maddox.
After graduate school, Jim received a commission from the Army ROTC program and married Marcia on September 20, 1969, in Las Cruces, NM. They shared 53 wonderful years of marriage. After Jim served his two years in the Army, he worked in the private sector until October of 1977, when he became an officer in the United States Air Force as a Bio Environmental Engineer, where he served over two decades. Next, Jim joined the Department of Defense as a Civil Engineer, where he served nearly a decade and most notably helping build and rebuild infrastructure in Iraq.
Jim and his family moved around the US during his Air Force years but spent two stints in San Antonio, TX where he also retired.
Jim was diagnosed with Alzheimer's nine years ago and it was a long difficult journey but even without his previously impeccable memory, he still kept his joy, wit, and sense of humor for most of those 9 years. The disease didn't stop him and Marcia from traveling the world and having a ton of focused and present time with their friends and family, especially their grandchildren.
Jim is survived by his wife, Marcia; his three children, Brent, Tanner, Tiffany; and 6 beautiful grandchildren, Gavin 14, Rylie 9, Brooks 7, Duke 6, Piper 4, and Walker 7 months. They all adored their "silly" Papa and his funny faces and kooky voices. Jim will be missed by all who knew him.
