Jim was born July 23, 1925 in Mobile, Alabama to Randall and Vivian Galloway Nelson. He graduated from Murphy High School early to join the U.S. Marine Corps and proudly served in WWII.
He met his bride, Ann Gonzales, before entering the University of Alabama to study business and play football for the "Crimson Tide". Upon graduation, he joined the sales team of Johns-Manville, which brought him to Texas. His family made homes in Abilene, Midland and San Angelo before planting firm roots in San Antonio in 1957.
Upon retirement in 1982 from Johns-Manville he managed CSW Supply and after a second retirement in 1990 had a roofing consulting business until 2006.
Jim's love of God, family and country dictated life decisions. 1 Corinthians 13 was his life verse. He was an active member at Alamo Heights Presbyterian and later First Presbyterian Churches, serving as a Sunday School teacher, a Superintendent and later an Elder.
He was an avid sportsman, hunter and a coach to many young boys on Little League and Pony League baseball teams.
Preceded in death by his parents and older brother Randall Hylman Nelson, Jim is survived by his wife of 58 years; daughter, Cathy Tony Sisk; son, Jim, Jr. Carroll; daughter, Becky Warren; and grandchildren, Jessica, Allison, and Amanda Sisk; James and Robert Nelson; and Paul, Whitney and Ellan Warren.
