I am beyond saddened at the loss of my childhood and lifetime friend who in 1951 introduced me to a classmate of his to whom
I was married 67 yeas and whom I lost last year.May Parsi find the strength and courage to go through the grief that follows. Peace to you, Patsi.

I worked for Dr. Rand during my Internships at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) Summer ‘82 & Summer ‘83  In 1986, he offered me a Mechanical Engineering job at a company where he was now the President and CEO, Winzen International.  Dr. Rand loved playing racquetball.  Occasionally, he would challenge me and my Engineering Manager Dr. James Wilbeck to a game of Cut-Throat., which was basically a contest between Dr. Rand, against Wilbeck and I as a team, 2 against 1.  Dr. Rand always won!  He had us running front to back, left to right, wearing us out.  We were lucky to just to keep the ball in play, and it almost always bounced to Dr. Rand planted in the middle of the court.  He would maybe take one step at most, to strike the ball into the corner.  "Work Smarter, not Harder" was his philosophy.  Back then, there was a revolutionary recreational laser tag game, called "Photon".  I organized a group party there.  Invited all my co-workers.  Dr. Rand was an inspiring leader.  He opted to participate.  Each player gets to pick a "Code Name".  Dr. Rand's Code Name was "Bwana", a Swahili word meaning "Master".  And Dr. Rand WAS a Master. (See Attached Photo of Dr. Rand wearing a T-Shirt imprinted with the front of a Tuxedo, equipped with all the Photon Game equipment.  I had the photograph enlarged to 24” x 36” and it hung in my office.)  Dr. Rand told me a story about his service in the military.  Each new recruit is given an aptitude test to see where their talents could be best utilized.  Most people have 1 or 2 good aptitudes.  Dr. Rand score very high in almost all of the aptitudes.  Since he did so well, the evaluators said, you are best suited to be one of the aptitude evaluators, who decides where to assign the recruits after Basic Training.  I believed that assignment prepared him to be the Mentor that has significantly influenced everyone he has met since then.  I was a major Introvert back then.  But as a Military placement reviewer, Dr. Rand saw my potential. He encouraged me to take an Officer position in the local Aerospace Engineer Society.  I proceeded through the ranks of Treasurer/Secretary/ V. P and President.  Three other co-workers were inspired by Dr. Rand to pursue their Masters Degrees. After 7 years, I decided to leave Winzen pursue a Masters degree as well.  No longer an Introvert, I was on the Performance Team for Fire on the Mountain Cloggers, grew in Toastmasters International becoming a Mentor, and Boy Scout Leader and Ropes Course facilitator.  25 year after graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, I was completely bored. So I decided to retire from the Engineering Profession and went to Law School.   But as much as I have learned, I am still "Ahhh Grasshopper" compared to my inspiration, "Bwana!" Thank you, Dr. Rand!

Patty, Terry, Mike, Eileen, Chris and Elizabeth we are so sorry for your loss.   We were glad to know that many of y'all were able to spend time with him recently.    Glad that you had that time.   You all will be in our thoughts.  Jeannine and Tim

My sincere condolences to Dr Rands family.  I worked for him at Winzen for five years as his secretary.  He was a great man and a wonderful boss.  He is remembered fondly.

Dr. Rand is a legend in the Ballooning Community his contributions will live forever.  My condolences to the Patsy and Family in this time of loss.

I always called Uncle Jim my favorite Uncle. He was, in fact, my only Uncle. An inside joke. Uncle Jim had a good sense of humor. I remember visits from him and his growing family over my childhood. Somewhere there is a photo of Uncle Jim, still in school, standing my toddler self up by my hands, with his horned-rimmed glasses on my nose. A big smile on both of our faces.  Last year my husband and I, after enduring months of isolation due to the pandemic, took a road trip. In our car. We live in Florida and were headed for California. So stopping in San Antonio en route was perfect. I’m so glad we did. Uncle Jim and Aunt Patsy were the perfect hosts. We thoroughly enjoyed having cocktails before dinner on their beautiful patio. Our discussions ran the gamut.  And now, during this very sad time, I am so glad that I have that memory. Uncle Jim was a joy to be around. His accomplishments made all of his family very proud. It saddens me that I won’t be able to converse with him again. But I believe that he had a really good life.  I know that Aunt Patsy, Aunt Deanne and my cousins are all feeling the loss. Uncle Jim was my most favorite uncle even though he was my only uncle! Always kind and generous, always interested in our lives. I have lovely memories of his visits throughout our childhood.  I love you!  Love, Claudia and David Dean

Uncle Jim was always so kind hearted. I wish I had been able to visit him in more recent years. I was fascinated by his work on our genealogy and was planning on writing to him to ask for copies of his research. He looked so joyous in the pictures he showed me of his travels abroad, seeing sites that were part of our heritage. He is loved and will be dearly missed.  Love and respect always, Autumn Lee
