Jim was born in Eddystone, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Ridley Township. He attended Trinity University in San Antonio on a basketball scholarship, graduating in 1963. After college, he was a lieutenant in the US Army for four years before returning to Trinity for a graduate degree in 1967. He became Intramurals Director and over the next 30 years developed that program into a nationally recognized one. In 2000 he retired to football officiating and grandchildren.
He was married in 1962 to his college sweetheart, Mary Alice. They had two children, Rob and Christa, and now have five grandchildren, Matthew, Thomas, James, Lily, and Mary.
"Coach" Potter had a wealth of officiating experience, ranging from conducting football officials clinics for the US Army in Germany and Italy to serving as Game Clock Operator at the AlamoDome for high school and college games to being the Alamo Bowl Officials Host and Liaison. He was a former vice-president of NIRSA, a regional director of TXHPER, a lieutenant in the US Army (stationed most of the time at Fort Hood, Texas), an elder in the Presbyterian Church, a volunteer with the SA Sports Foundation, and an officer and member of the San Antonio Sports Officiating Foundation. He loved officiating high school and college football games.
Jim received the Outstanding Professor Award at Trinity University in 1971, the Trinity University Jim Potter Intramural Sportsmanship Award in 1980, the NIRSA Service Award in 1984, the NIRSA Regional Award of Merit in 1991, and was inducted into the Trinity University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003. His dedication to Trinity University over thirty years was celebrated in 2017 with the naming of their intramurals field the "Jim Potter Field."
A celebration of Jims life at Trinity was held in 2017. No one had more fun and excitement than "Coach" himself when many family members and former student staff were in attendance. He will be remembered for his gentle love and guidance of his staff and his "frequent trips to the library" to work on his memoirs.
Visitation is scheduled at Porter Loring North, Thursday, June 30, 2022 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.
Interment will be at a later date when all family members can attend.
