Col. James “Jim” Scott USAF (Ret.), passed away on September 30, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas. James was born to Reverand Charlton and Annie Laura Scott on December 24, 1942, on St. Simons Island, Georgia.
Jim was blessed with his “BRIDE” Angelyn, in a long-lasting marriage of 60 years.
Jim moved to San Antonio for the third time in his Air Force career in 1991 after being stationed worldwide throughout his time in the service. He retired from the Air Force as a Colonel in 1995. After his service to the country, he continued to work with service members and their families as Vice President of United Services Automobile Association (USAA).Jim had a passion for helping others as a member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), National Association of Black Veterans (NABVETS), and the Police Association. He greatly enjoyed singing with the choir at church and mentoring a multitude of diverse students from grade school through high school; he was also known to spend quality time encouraging neighborhood children by listening to their stories of interest. He took particular pride in steering his godchildren (Ezra, BJ, Mesyia, and Anthony) in pursuit of Godliness. Jim also loved taking care of his yard, as it was his pride and joy.
Jim started his education in a one-room schoolhouse on St Simons Island. That schoolhouse is now a historic monument in part, thanks to his efforts. He attended Risley High School in Brunswick, GA and graduated in 1960. He worked in the Little Red Barn, a local restaurant not too far from his home. He later enlisted in the Air Force. He embodied the characteristics of integrity first, service before self, and excellence, long before the words became synonymous with the Air Force. Later in his career, he would go on to receive his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Golden Gate College. Immediately after college, he attended Officers Training School (OTS) and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force. Rapidly climbing through the ranks, Jim attained the rank of Colonel. As a highly decorated commander and senior officer, he served in many locations foreign and domestic, protecting the interests of the United States. Because of his sustained and superior performance, he was immediately upon retirement, pursued and hired as a senior executive, Vice President of USAA, in Procurement. He spent his later days in retirement serving the many he cared about. He was the DAV Commander for the Roy G. Hodges Chapter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Charlton Scott, Raymond Scott, and Robbie Scott; sister, Sophie Ramsey; brothers, Franklin Scott, and Samuel Scott; son, Alan Scott.
