James “Jim” aka “Pop” Souhrada, a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, proud United States Air Force veteran, educator, and faithful servant to his community, passed away surrounded by the love of his family. He was a gentle man whose humor, wit, kindness, and unwavering love for his family touched everyone who knew him. He will be greatly missed and forever remembered.
Jim was born to Joseph and Delphine Souhrada in Bay Shore, New York. His father owned and operated a local butcher shop in Islip, New York where Jim spent many afternoons as a young boy visiting after school. He treasured sitting in the back room with his grandfather and learning the value of hard work, family, and community. Jim grew up in Long Island, New York, alongside his two brothers, where he met Nancy Mahoney of Deer Park, New York who became his loving wife of 63 years and traveled the world with him.
Jim proudly joined the United States Air Force, where he built a long and honorable career in military service, retiring at the rank of major. Through his service, he and his family had the opportunity to travel the world and experience places and cultures many only dream of seeing. Alongside his beloved wife, Nancy, Jim built a home filled with love, stability, and generosity. Together they adopted three children and welcomed one biological son, raising all four children with deep devotion and care. His children always knew they were loved, protected, and provided for.
He valued education deeply and earned his master’s degree while on active duty, balancing family life and his professional responsibilities.
After retiring from the Air Force, Jim continued his dedication to service through the Texas Corrections Education System, where he also retired after many years.
Faith played a central role in Jim’s life throughout each duty station. He professed his love through being an active choir member. After Air Force retirement, he spent many years fundraising, building and supporting his church community, beginning from its early days in a small temporary worship space. He faithfully served as a Eucharistic Minister, volunteered at the church food bank, and spent countless hours counting donations after services. His quiet generosity and servant’s heart left a lasting impact on his parish and community.
Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy, whom he will now lovingly join in eternal rest.
He is survived by his children: Joseph “Tony” Souhrada; James “Andy” Souhrada; Jennifer “Jen” Souhrada and her husband, Thomas “Tom” Doeller; and Jeffery “Jeff” Souhrada and his wife, Melissa Souhrada. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Matthew “Matt” Souhrada, Joshua “Josh” Souhrada, Jacob “Jake” Souhrada, and Abigail “Abby” Souhrada; his brother, Donald “Don” Souhrada and his wife, Christine “Chris” Souhrada; as well as many beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. Jim also leaves behind his long-term caregivers, Lisa Whitley, Brenda Cloud and Jeff Cloud, who lived full-time with him and Nancy for several years providing dedicated care.
Jim lived a life defined by service, faith, humor, generosity and unconditional love for his family. His legacy will continue through the many lives he touched, the values he instilled, and the memories his loved ones will forever hold close to their hearts.
