James Robert Thompson (Rick) was born in Abilene, Texas on January 22, 1941. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Joan Thompson of Austin, Texas. He is survived by his three children, Stacee Thompson, Jill Thompson and Troy Thompson; grandchildren, Austin and Karli Miller; and his sister, Chris Love.
Rick grew up in Abilene, playing little league baseball and varsity basketball at Abilene High School. He was an avid bowler and strived for that "300" game which he achieved several times. Rick's love of sports continued throughout his lifetime and his jubilation and frustration with the Texas Longhorns, Dallas Cowboys and San Antonio Spurs never wavered. He was a better than average golfer, fisherman, and card player.
Rick served in the Army for over twenty years including tours of duty in Europe, Korea and Vietnam. He was a member of the 529th Military Police Company in Germany and had recently become reacquainted with his fellow soldiers from the 529th. He had attended the 529th reunion in Las Vegas in 2009 and was looking forward to the next reunion in Florida. "Bones" will be there in spirit!
Rick was a published author of two books and had a gift for writing poetry. For those of us who knew him, family and friends, we are wishing him an abundance of air to breath and the ease of taking it all in. Enjoy those golf games and CATCH THE BIG ONE!
DISTANT MEMORIES
Distant Memories coming through
A look at life the things we do
Where I have been what I have done
My distant memories remember the fun
Each distant memory from shore to shore
Are meant to see the life I explored
Of what I remember some borrowed, some true
The distant memories of my life with you
Whether you're my town my school or just a friend
My distant memories carry me to the end.......
