

Jim was born April 6, 1940 in Whiteville, North Carolina and raised in Herndon, Virginia. He was in the U.S. Navy over 30 years and retired June 1, 1989 at NAS Corpus Christi, Texas. Master Chief Walters received numerous decorations and awards; Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation with 4 Stars, Vietnam Service Medal with 10 Stars and Navy Overseas Service Ribbon with 2 stars. He served aboard ships primarily in the Western Pacific, South China Sea and the Mediterranean (USS Springfield CLG7 and USS Ticonderoga CVA-14). Jim loved the sea and ship duty. A Vietnam vet who served his country with the 3rd Marine Amphibious Force outside of Danang, the Annapolis Support facility in Saigon and had three deployments off Vietnam waters.
He was a member of Ft. Sam Houston Men's Golf Association and played with a respected group of friends twice a week for many years.
Jim was an avid reader of non-fiction books.
He is preceded in death by his loving mother (Mops) Elizabeth Butler. Jim is survived by his beloved daughter, Sonya Walters Haynes; son-in-law, Jud Haynes; granddaughter, Jordyn Elizabeth Haynes of Leander, Texas; his brother, William Butler and wife, Pat of Berkley Springs, West Virginia; sisters, Faye Buckley and husband, Mike of Groveton, California, Linda Martin of Fairmont, West Virginia, Barbara Starkey and husband, Michael of Berryville, Virginia.
A loving father and brother who will be missed so much - we love you.
