Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Jan was the second of three children of Alfred Young and Marguerite Mosely Willard. She attended Charleston High School, Ashley Hall girls’ school, and Southern Seminary Junior College in Virginia. A gifted artist with a love for German Folk Art, she nurtured her talent throughout life, inspired early on by her high school art teacher, Ms. Smith.
At 13, Jan met the love of her life, Philip Thomson Roberts. They married on September 3, 1955, and shared 63 devoted years together. As a proud Air Force wife, Jan embraced military life, forming lifelong friendships and building a warm, welcoming home wherever they were stationed.
She is survived by her children, Jan Sahut (CT), Philip Roberts Jr. (DeeDee), and Gayle Ward-Conner (Steve); seven grandchildren, Jayme Ward (Taylor), Brandon Roberts, Derrick Ward (Julie), Brittany Nachlas (Brian), Brooke Ward, Brennan Sahut (Melinda), and Cassi Sahut; and thirteen great-grandchildren; her sister, Gayle W. Good; brother, Alfred Willard Jr. (Lucille); cousin, Linda Altobellis; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Jan was preceded in death by her husband, Philip; her parents; her son-in-law, Scott Ward; and many more beloved relatives.
Known for her artistic spirit, her marvelous cooking, and deep devotion to her family, friends and military community, Jan’s memory will be cherished by all who knew her.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., on Wednesday November 5, 2025, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
A Graveside service follows at 1:30 p.m., at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
