Janice Carter Oldfather was born November 8, 1930, in Topeka, Kansas, the only child to Thelma Frances Chalfant Carter and James Wilbur Carter. Jan's mother died when Jan was eight years old, and four years later, her father married Suzanne Baxter.
She died peacefully at home on June 3, 2012, at age 81, surrounded by her family. Jan was raised in Omaha, Nebraska, and after high school, she received her degree from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.
While at the University of Nebraska, Jan was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. While at the University, she met her future husband, Dr. Richard Oldfather, on a blind date, and they married in 1953. After graduation from dental school, Dr. Oldfather enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War and served as a Captain and dentist in Japan.
After the War, they relocated to the University of Iowa where Dr. Oldfather obtained his advanced degree in orthodontics. Upon graduation, they moved to San Antonio, Texas, with their six-month old daughter, Anne. Their two sons, Mike and Tom were born shortly after arriving in San Antonio.
Upon settling in this city, the Oldfathers joined University Presbyterian Church in 1957, where they remained active members for the remainder of their lives. Jan was also an active member of the Junior League of San Antonio for many years as well as the Dental Auxiliary. She was devoted to her husband of 50 years, Dr. Richard Oldfather, their three children, Anne, Mike and Tom, their spouses and their grandchildren and one great-grandchild, as well as their extended family members.
Jan was a committed Christian, a Child of God, and a dedicated member of University Presbyterian Church. She loved being with her family, working in the garden and spending time at their vacation home on South Padre Island. She had a passion for the peace and tranquility of the seashore and the beauty of the Gulf of Mexico. Jan is now in the presence of God, healed and free of cancer. She is on the other side of the horizon, just beyond the limit of our human sight, and joyfully worships and praises God in His Eternal Kingdom along side all of those she loved who have gone before her, especially her husband, Dick.
Jan is predeceased by her parents, her step-mother, her beloved husband, Dr. Richard "(Dick") Harold Oldfather, who died in 2003, her brother-in law, Charles Oldfather, her mother-in-law, Marcia Hazlett Oldfather and father-in-law, Harold Oldfather.
Jan is survived by her three children: Anne Oldfather Blankenship, her husband, John William Blankenship, their son, Samuel Harrison Blankenship, their daughter, Sarah Scott Blankenship Dewey, her husband, Guillermo Dewey, their son, Maximiliano Dewey; Michael Harold Oldfather and his wife, Valerie Kay Ovenden Oldfather, and their children, Eric Carter Oldfather and Matthew Carson Oldfather (all of San Antonio); and Thomas Edward Oldfather and his wife, Maritza Flores Oldfather (of San Antonio). Jan is also survived by her sister-in-law, Diane Oldfather (Mrs. Charles Oldfather), her brother-in-law, Alan Oldfather, and his wife, Germaine Oldfather. She is also survived by several cousins, numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. The family wants to thank Jan's healthcare providers for their excellent and compassionate care during her illness, including Sheila Sullivan, Yolanda Reyes, Warrie Farris, LaNae Garrett, Samantha Barrientos, Bertha Garca, Ellen McClellan and Guadalupe Alonso.
They wish to warmly extend a special thanks to Tracy Marjonen for her loving care, extraordinary support and friendship. Jan will be deeply missed by her family and friends, who will greatly miss her kindness and compassion, her gracious demeanor, her internal and external beauty, her humility, her strength, and her sense of humor.
