Ms. Jean Berry Anno passed away on Monday, April 18th, 2022, in San Antonio, Texas, just after celebrating her 79th birthday. Jean was born in Bakersfield, CA, on April 10th, 1943, to parents, Jim and Edith Berry. Jean was the middle of three daughters.
She is survived by both of her sisters, Gay Berry, and Kim Beckley; both of her son’s family, Jasen & Debbie Anno, Erick & Melody Anno; her grandchildren, Jonathan & Gabby Anno, Horizon & Will Bowerman, Lynzi Anno, and Corbin Anno; and her great-grandchildren, Drew, Luke, and Beau.
Growing up, Jean was academically and athletically orientated. She won numerous academic awards and participated in tennis, basketball, and swimming. Jean attended North High School in Bakersfield. She then attended UCLA, graduating with a degree in microbiology.
As everyone knows, her love of sports remained steadfast throughout her life. She enjoyed soccer, water skiing, golf, and bowling. She kept up with sports of all kinds and was a loyal Spurs, Astros, and Dodger’s fan. She was always impressively well-versed in all the latest happenings throughout the sporting world, including the NFL, tennis, golf, Olympics, and World Cup. We would even say what happened on “ESPN 8 the Ocho”.
Jean found a way to put herself through nursing school as a mother of two sons, Jasen and Erick. She had a long and fruitful career in nursing as a surgical nurse, O.R., Recovery Room Director, and nursing informatics. Thank you to all of her co-workers for keeping an eye out, providing service hours, and putting smiles on her son's faces during our hours together.
Jean also selflessly offered her medical skills to her community as a volunteer, serving as the Medical Director for the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo for over three decades. She eventually became a Director Emeritus for the medical committee.
Jean loved to travel with her children and grandchildren and with friends. She was fascinated with holistic health and pursued a passion and depth of knowledge with essential oils. We can add crocheting and woodworking to her many talents and passions. Jean enjoyed dogs and had a particular appreciation for Dandie Dinmont Terriers, Zip, Gus, and Scotch Whisky, to name a few over the years. She had a tremendous appreciation for great food and was an outstanding cook. Jean made it a point to preserve and pass on many favorite recipes to the family and friends.
Jean was always devoted to her family and sacrificed a great deal to safeguard the well-being of her children and their families. She was a strong, fiercely independent, and opinionated woman with a beautiful sense of humor and contagious enthusiasm for the things she cared about. She was a devoted friend and matriarch and will be sorely missed by her community of family and friends.
Please come and toast with us as we celebrate Mom’s/Jean’s/Grammy’s life with margaritas, one of her favorites (you can also bring her other favorite, a single malt scotch). To receive information about this event being held in June, please contact Jasen ([email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>) or Erick to obtain the exact date, time, and location. This site will be updated with the date and time when the details become available.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo scholarships - “Donations in memory of Jean B Anno can be made by sending a check payable to the San Antonio Livestock Exposition, Inc. to PO Box 200230 San Antonio, TX 78220 or by calling the accounting department at 210-225-5851 for a credit card payment.” (Info provided by Jamie Brown CFO for S.A.L.E.)
