Jean Bullen Newman died October 2, 2012 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she was in a nursing home near her son and his wife. She was born January 2, 1915 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Shortly after graduating from Oklahoma A. and M. College (now Oklahoma State University) in 1936, Jean married William C. Newman, Jr. During the summer of 1940, Mr. Newman and his brother, John E. Newman, started an oilfield drilling company in San Antonio, which they maintained until the mid-1950s, becoming independent oil producers and investors thereafter, until her husband's untimely death in 1970. During the Second World War, when her husband managed the company alone, she maintained their home in San Antonio while also moving from one temporary home in South Texas to another, so that the family could be together near the company's operations. Once it was again possible to have a settled life, Jean was an active volunteer in a number of civic organizations and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Attachments with her Kappa Alpha Theta sorority sisters, her gardening friends, and her bridge playing group were strong. Charitable activities were an important part of her life, particularly support of The Salvation Army, the San Antonio Library Foundation's "Born to Read" program, and an Oklahoma State University Intern Fellowship for students in fashion design. She is survived by her son, John B. Newman and his wife, Sandra of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; her nephew, John E. Newman, Jr. and his wife, Ann of San Antonio; five grandsons, a granddaughter and three great-grandchildren.
