

Jim Hamby went home to be with the Lord on the evening of Wednesday, February 15th, 2017 at the age of 85. Born to Eloise and Luther Hamby in Hickory, North Carolina, Jim left at 18 to join the air force where he was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Upon his return to San Antonio, he managed a Dairy Queen where he later built the business to 23 Dairy Queens and Hamby's as well as other business interests in the San Antonio area. Jim was president of the San Antonio and Texas Restaurant Association. He was an avid fisher, hunter, golfer and pilot. In later years, Jim loved farming and ranching, where he raised cattle, grew peanuts, hay and vegetables. His family was of the utmost importance to him and they will always remember their fond memories with their dad (daddy), papa, grand-dad, and Uncle Jim.
Jim is survived by his wife, Phyllis Hamby and his five children: Jenny Hamby, Carolyn (Keith) Stoddard, David Hamby, Loretta Hamby and Susan (John) Lammert; grandchildren: Tioda Hamby, Daniel Vargas, Rachel Rials, Natalie Rials, Meleah Balderaz, Albert Daum, Corbin Senser, Hamby-Louise Senser and 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Billye Terrell, niece, Kathy Terrell and nephew, Stephen White; step-children: Bert Poutra and Sylvie Putnam; Step-grandchildren: Wade Cleary, Andrea Gilliland, Dillon Witten, Hunter Witten, Brock Poutra and Brooklyn Poutra. Preceded in death by his step-daughters: Janet Cleary, Karen Daniel and step-grandson, Brad Cleary.
Memorial Service is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at Porter Loring North, 2102 N. Loop 1604 East.
