On April 19 the world lost a wonderful young man, son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and brother-in-law. The world also lost a friend. Whether you were a fellow officer, subordinate, or waiter he had never met, he always made others feel respected.
Joe was a man who was true to his faith. He served the church in many capacities like serving on administrative boards, teaching vacation bible school, making breakfast tacos, driving the church bus and establishing a scholarship fund for graduating seniors with the United Methodist Men.
Joe was born in Gladewater, Texas to Martin Vance and Bessie Deoleice Locke on July 8, 1948. He graduated from Big Sandy High School. He graduated from The University of Texas at Austin, in Aerospace Engineering. Following graduation Joe married the love of his life Mary Phyllis Brannen. Joe entered the US Air Force and shortly after their marriage Joe left for Officer Training School. Upon graduation from OTS he and Phyllis embarked on a lifetime military career that took them on a 30 year around the world tour. At Dyess Air Force Base they had their first daughter Jennifer Ellaine and at Scott Air Force Base they had their second daughter Jamie Lynn, and he completed his masters degree in Business Administration. Joe attended the prestigious National War College in Washington D.C. At Howard Air Force Base, Panama he gained his Son in Law Landon Lee Henderson who was the son he never had.
Joes favorite topics of conversations were his grandchildren, UT sports, and anything to do with Harley Davidson. The accomplishments of his Eagle Scout grandsons Brooks and Cooper whether be it on the baseball field or on the wrestling mat brought him great pride and just the mention of Maddie's name brought a sparkle to his eye.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis Brannen Gorman; daughter Jennifer and Landon Henderson and daughter Jamie Gorman-Love; grandchildren Brooks Gorman Henderson, Cooper Mullin Henderson and Madelynn Mary Love; his sister Gwen Gorman Watkins and husband Bob, Sister-in-law Debbie and Jerry DAmbrosio, Brother-in-LawJim and Jennifer Brannen and Brother in law John and Laura Brannen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by many extended family, including Eddie and Rusty Robertson.
