So sorry to hear of your loss.  Mr. Harness was my band director at Cummings Junior High in Brownsville 1967-1969, and an assistant director at Brownsville High School for us '69-'73.  He had so much patience with us and always a kind and encouraging word for everyone.  He will be greatly missed.  Thank you Mr. Harness, for being such a wonderful teacher.

To Mr. Harness's family,  Recently I came across a list of sayings and phrases that he said (or yelled) while directing us.  The trombone section accumulated these over my years there and presented the list to him at the end of my senior year. He laughed and laughed. If you would like a glimpse of him from the band hall podium, contact me and I can send it to you.

Mr. Harness was a great influence on me as my band director at Pace from 1987-1991. While I haven't played a trombone in over 20 years, I use the lessons and leadership skills that he taught me everyday. He showed great patience with all of us not-always-perfectly-behaved teenagers. He also made being a member of the band fun while installing a lifelong love of music.

Mr. Harness was my band instructor at Annie S. Putegnat Elementary around 1965-66. He taught me how to play the flute. An incredibly kind-hearted man, I watched him treat every child with patience and equanimity. He did not play favorites, was respectful of every child, and he commanded respect himself by virtue of his capability and comportment. I have never forgotten him over the years. My sincerest condolences to the family.

I was so saddened to open the paper and find your husband's obit. I had not sent a message to you sooner since the obit in the Brownsville Herald didn't have the name of the funeral home who took care of services for Mr. Harness but I saw Letty Scheiber (your neighbor) and she shared info. with me. I just wanted to tell you how sorry I was to hear of his passing and yes you will be alright. Time as they say heals all.
If you ever come to Brownsville please call me at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home so that we can get together. Linda and I would love to see you.

Mr. Harness started me off on the cornet in 6th grade and helped me to become a better player throughout my school years!  I will never forget all he did for me and for all band students who performed for him throughout his years in band directing!!!  He was an amazing man and will be missed tremendously!!!!  R.I.P. Mr. Harness and thank you!!!!!!!!!!!

I was honored to work with Joe as one of his Assistant Band Directors, for over 12 years....A mentor to many of us younger directors at the years at Pace, Joe was a Renaissance Man in idea, and deed. His loving, successful family is a tribute to all he stood for. Thank you Joe for all you have done, you made a difference in my life.

My sincere condolences to Mr. Harness' family. Mr. Harness was my band director at Cummings and what a wonderful experience it was knowing him. He was kind, caring and influential in my life.  May you Rest in Peace Mr. Harness.

Dear Alma, I am so, so sorry about the passing of "Mr. Harness". To me, he was a great role-model for young people in the Brownsville area. He taught me and the whole Pace marching band many life lessons. I still remember the day he made a phone call to the band director at East Texas State University, recommending me to a music scholarship. I got it! all because of "Mr Harness"  I will always remember him as "Mr Harness" , my band director. He made a great difference in my life. I now have been teaching for  18 years in Kent School in Kent, CT. Mr. Harness was a wonderful human being. I will miss him greatly.

It was a big blessing to me to have had the pleasure to take care of you. 
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be a part of your life. I loved you & will still love and remember you for the rest of my life. Know you Have a clear mind.

So sorry to hear this news.  Joe was one of my best friends/roommate during our N. Texas years (we were "matched" as roommates by Prof. John Haynie); *terrific* musician and person.  We stayed in touch as best as possible in later years, but, alas, I now wish this had been much more often.
