Joe was a proud graduate of Fox Tech High School, Class of 1966, where he lettered in football during his final three years, demonstrating dedication, teamwork, and perseverance. Following high school, he worked at Wolf Nursery and held several other positions throughout his career. His final and longest employment was with Tom Benson, where he worked faithfully for over 15 years before retiring in 2014.
In September of 1975, Joe married the love of his life, Rita, and through this union became a devoted and caring father to Steven Urtiaga. Joe and Rita later renewed their vows on their 25th wedding anniversary in a beautiful ceremony officiated by Pastor Hagee, with their original maid of honor and best man once again standing beside them. The celebration was attended by many friends and family and concluded with a reception held in the Prayer Garden.
Joe and Rita shared a deep love for travel and cherished many adventures together. Their travels included Alaska, Arizona, Las Vegas, Boston, Washington, D.C., Playa del Carmen, Branson, Missouri, Sedona, and many other destinations.
Joe was a devoted member of Cornerstone Church for over 50 years. He served faithfully as an usher for more than 20 years and was actively involved in the church softball team, where he played catcher, pitcher, and first base alongside Pastor Hagee and fellow church members. His service and commitment reflected his deep faith and love for his church community.
Joe is survived by his three sisters: Martha Guzman, Stella Ortiz, and Toni Soto, along with numerous beloved nieces and nephews. He is also survived by extended family including Mrs. Thresa Robertson and her son Stephen; Mrs. Vivian Markwell and her husband Malcolm; Mr. Sean Shawcross and his wife Amanda and their children Erick and Ella; and Mrs. Amyssa Maldonado and her husband Josh and their children Danny, Bella, and Gene, all of whom reside in Alaska.
Pallbearers honoring Joe’s life are Rick Medina, Jimmy Kurtz, Leon Reeves, Tom Lasater, David Soto, and Steven Urtiaga.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to all who attended and supported Joe’s Celebration of Life. Your presence, prayers, and kindness are deeply appreciated.
