

John Price Canby died on July 15th, 2017 from dementia and a stroke. He was born at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital, Denver, Colorado on September 20th, 1929. His parents were Brigadier General Clarence Price Canby and Beverly Turner Canby. After graduating from Vanderbilt University in 1954 with a Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Medicine degrees, he joined the United States Army. His internship was completed at Letterman Army Hospital and his residency training in Pediatrics at Brooke Army Hospital. He earned a Masters degree in Health Care Administration from Baylor University and finished a fellowship in Tropical Medicine from Louisiana State University. During his 34 years of military service, he held numerous medical positions, as Chief of Pediatrics, Chief of Professional Services, Hospital Commander, Army Medical Attaché in India, Liaison Officer to Australian Army Medical Director, and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Georgetown University. He retired from the Army in 1984 to reside in San Antonio. He worked at The San Antonio State Chest Hospital as Chief of Pediatrics and Chief of the Out-Patients Clinic. He gave many volunteers hours on the Board of The Army Residents Community, as a Tour Guide at Brooke Army Medical Center, as Men’s Tennis Leagues Coordinator for the US Tennis Association, with the SA Tennis Association in the after school tennis program, and on committees and on the Board of The Towers where he resided.
He is survived by his devoted wife Margaret, sons John Jr., Robert and wife Deborah, daughter Charlee and husband Wally, grandchildren Marc and Catherine Canby, John and Robert Magruder, brother Steven Loomis Canby and wife Marianne and children Frederick and Kirsten and families. He also is survived by sister-in-law Dorothy Pakalka and many nieces, nephews and cousins. John dearly loved his medicine, his country and his family.
Services will be held at Sunset Memorial Home on July 28th, 2017 at noon followed by interment at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with military honors. John had requested in lieu of flowers a donation be made to the Transplants for Children Association, 11107 Wurzbach Road in San Antonio or any children’s charity.
