

After graduating from Champaign High School in 1957, he went on to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he obtained his Bachelor's Degree in the Teaching of Social Studies and his first Master's Degree in History. Upon graduating John went to teach high school social studies at the American school in Lima, Peru where he first met his future wife, Rosa.
Upon returning to the United States to teach, he contracted tuberculosis and was hospitalized for 11 months. During that time John had a healing experience in which he was filled with the healing power of the Holy Spirit and was called to go into the Ministry. He attended the Chicago Theological Seminary during which time he interned in Peru and married Rosa. John completed a Master of Divinity Degree (cum laude) and went on to pastor at the Winnebago United Church of Christ Church and Mission near Black River Falls, Wisconsin.
In 1975, John and his family were called to San Antonio, TX to Bethany United Church of Christ, where he oversaw the merging of that church with Pilgrim Congregational Church. John faithfully pastored Bethany Congregational Church U.C.C. for 22 years before retiring being named Pastor Emeritus. John led Bethany's annual German Christmas Candlelight service (Weihnachtsfeier) for 37 years and was also an active member of the Beethoven Mnnerchor and a 32nd degree Mason. During those years, he also taught U.S. History part-time at San Antonio College. Over the past few years, John has been active with the Alamo Heights Christian Church and worked in the office.
He is survived by his wife, Rosa Culver of 44 years and one month; his twin brother, Ernest Culver and wife, Carol; a daughter, Janice Tammen and husband, Chris Tammen; and two sons, John M Culver and wife, Cynthia Culver, and Edward Culver and partner, Daniel McFarlin. He also survived by three granddaughters, and many nieces and nephews.
