Big John was a friend of my nephew Charles Carnahan and served as a groomsman at his wedding 3-4 weeks before he died. My deepest condolences to Mr. and Mrs. Esquivel,Lisa,Paul,Jenn and extended family. Words seem inadequate to express the sadness I feel.  Having known Big John for 20+ years.  I will never forget him and will cherish every memory of him.  He will always have a special place in my heart.

-God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put His arms around you and whispered "come to me." With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you slowly slip away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.

Didn't have to know you long to know you well.  Your smile and grace in the midst of adversity say so much about the man you were and the blessings you shared. I'm reminded of the song by Santana:  "Europa"---but, more than that, I'm reminded of the subtitle of that song:  "Earth's cry---Heaven's Smile". All blessings young warrior! I knew Big John for a short while although I learned of his great spirit and love for people. I learned of his great mental strength as he journeyed through his difficult illness.  John inspired me with his bravery with not a single complaint.  I know that Big John and his Great Big Heart is in a better place with the Lord. I met Big John 14 yrs ago.  When I first saw him outside of an all ages pool hall, my barely 5’, 100lb frame was a little intimidated by his larger than life persona.  Within a minute of hearing him talk I realized that this guy is just one big sweetheart.  He had a great sense of humor and not at all afraid to say what was on his mind.  His voice was distinct, his laugh memorable. 

Throughout the years I would only see Big John a few times a year, maybe at a friends gathering or a S.A. Fiesta event.  Each time I saw him though he would give the best teddy bear hug a person could ever get.  He’d talk in such a welcoming way as if no time had passed at all.
  
 
I wish I had been in better contact with him these past couple of years.  It’s a regret I will always carry.  I believed in my heart that he had more time fighting his cancer and would prevail.  Maybe I just saw Big John as invincible.  He belonged on this earth and there was no way he would be taken so soon.

In actuality, Big John was invincible.  Although his body may have had no choice but to give in to this terrible illness, his mind and spirit fought to the very end.  And because of that he has inspired in a way only Big John could.  He’s inspired a new kind of battle within me. 

What keeps me going is my faith in Christ and his promise of eternal life free from pain.  “And so, made heirs by his own grace, eternal life we now embrace.” – Titus 3:7.

To Jennifer, Adrian, Mr. & Mrs. Esquivel, Lisa & Paul and your respective family members:  Know that Big John will be so missed and we are all so blessed to have had him in our lives.  I pray that his love will reach you and embrace you during this difficult time.  May God blessings strengthen you in the days to come.  Peace & Prayers,
