After high school John enlisted in the United States Navy. He traveled the world during 21 years of active duty, rose to the rate of Petty Officer 1st Class, and ended his military career in Alameda, California.
Upon retirement, John returned to San Antonio, and worked 13 years as an HVAC technician. Failing eyesight forced him to retire again, although he continued working in his brother’s machine shop.
John was predeceased by his parents and his son, James Juan. His six surviving adult children are Michelle Hernandez, Kathleen Finney, Jonathan Finney, Jolynda Finney, Sarah Finney, and Jessica Baker. He leaves behind 8 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. His surviving siblings are Mary Ellen Peipert, Kay Finney, Jean Henderson, Ann Mueller, Bob Finney and Jim Finney.
John was a loving, hardworking man who always put the needs of others before his own. He will be missed by all who knew him. Thank you for your service to our country.
Visitation will take place from 5:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Thursday, April 7, 2016 at Sunset Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 9:00 a.m. Friday, April 8, 2016 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bill Shockley officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
