John Hutton, beloved husband, father, teacher, and friend, passed away on Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at the age of 58. John was born in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, on June 3, 1949, to John L. and Margaret McDonald Hutton, who preceded him in death. John is survived by his wife Paula, daughter Amy, sister Barbara Ropp of Warrenton, Missouri; aunt May Linn of Glasgow, Scotland; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. After graduating from high school, John went to Indiana University in Bloomington, where he graduated with a BA in political science. He attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina and relocated to Chicago, where he married Paula. While working at the Art Library at Northwestern University, he became interested in art and enrolled in graduate school. He received his Ph.D. in art history in 1986 and in the fall of that year began teaching at Trinity University in San Antonio. For 21 years, John taught art history at Trinity University, making an indelible impression on many students and colleagues during that period. He wrote many articles, published one book and was working on another at the time of his death. John gave many lectures and tours in San Antonio museums, as well as throughout the country. He had many interests outside the field of art; he especially loved movies and music, and he acted in plays throughout high school and college and in the faculty plays at Trinity. He was known for his sense of humor, his unpretentious demeanor, his kindness and sympathy toward his students and co-workers. John loved teaching, and even as his health declined, worked hard to prepare his classes. John had many interests, but his great loves were his family, his teaching and Trinity University. We will all miss him more than words can express.
