

John Garrett Starnes, incredible husband, father and friend died Monday, August 27th. Born August 2, 1933 in Midway, West Virginia to John Earl Starnes and Cecil McBride, he moved to Libuse, Louisiana shortly after his 5th birthday. Around the age of thirteen, John moved to Victoria, Texas where he put himself through Jr. and Sr. High while starring in Basketball and Track & Field. After a 2-year track scholarship to Victoria Jr. College was completed, John joined the United States Army. Shortly after that enrollment, he and Jean A. Rambo were wed in a military service in Anniston, Alabama whom he devoted his life to for over 56 years before she passed December 15, 2009.
John never shirked a task. He was the epitome of “Hard Work.” If you needed a job done, he was there to complete it. Everyone that John touched knew his passion, enthusiasm and drive to always “make things right.” His smile, friendly demeanor, and overall welcoming nature will be missed, but will continue to live on through those closest to him.
John is survived by sons, Gary and John Greg Starnes, daughters-in-law Linda M. and Dawn Starnes, sister Winnie Roberts, six grandchildren whom he adored: Jennifer, John Alexander and his wife Tirzah, Jonathan, Shane, Brent, and Dylan Starnes, one lovely great-granddaughter, Breslynn Starnes, Brother and sister-in-law Newell and Georgia Ann Rambo Jr. along with 2 other significant people in his life, Jennifer Clark and Linda R. Starnes.
John will be available for visitation on Thursday, August 30th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, August 31st at Sunset North Funeral Home, 910 North Loop 1604 East,San Antonio, TX 78232 at 1:00 p.m. with a graveside services following at Fort Sam Houston, 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, John would take pride in your making a donation to the American Heart Association or Thrive Well Cancer Foundation (www.thrivewell.org), P.O Box 29331, San Antonio, Texas 78229, a locally-based cancer foundation established to enable San Antonio and area patients living with cancer thrive.
