'I was so sorry to hear of John's passing. From what his brother, Adam has said over the past year, John has been on a difficult roller coaster ride with many visits to the hospital. Tubes, pumps, bells,being woken up many times for blood draws, breath sounds and more are finally over. Ubaldo has been the best partner John could have had and surely he will be missed by him.

'John Szetelas Eulogy 
September 27, 2014 
For those of you who may not know me I am Kevin Duhrkopf. Both my partner Tony and I have known John for nearly 20 years and 14 of those years have been with his loving and devoted partner Uvaldo. We feel so fortunate, as I am sure many of you do, to have shared those years with our dear friend John. 
I ask you to look around, look at all the people John touched and brought together. In his quiet way, it made him proud to know he was able to make so many good friends and make so many wonderful people a part of his life. For John, that was the real measure of success. 
John was not only a smart, successful and interesting man but also a giving man - both loving and humble. And a lot of fun to be around. In many ways John was a private man but when it came to family and friends he always loved to share his success with everyone. John also gave support to those causes he was passionate about. He did so quietly without seeking any recognition. 
Many of us met John after he reached a level of success that came from his hard work and determination, a part of his life many of us didnt see or didnt even know. John was not pretentious, when asked And what do you do for a living? John would always say I do toilets. Even to complete strangers. What he was saying in his joking way was he was a landlord. Ironically, what we found out later from his sister Chris was that Johns first job with the airlines was actually cleaning toilets. So I guess you could say his career had come full circle. 
John was impressive with his knowledge of real estate and property management and his ability to remember details, like the addresses and details of 150 homes or more. He was a successful investor, had a sophisticated appreciation for art, loved to travel, and most of all enjoyed cooking for everyone. And was especially good at mastering the art of grilling. 
For those of you who dont know, John grew up in the small village of Wysoka, Poland. Born in his grandparents home, a small wooden structure with dirt floors, that was next to the Grist Mill his grandparents operated. He later lived in a small 2 room house built by his parents that had no electricity or no running water. Sleeping in wooden boxes stuffed with straw that served as benches for seating during the day. Livestock was housed in the cellar to provide additional heat in the winter to warm the home. 
Unfortunately, Johns father died when John was only 7 years old but he bravely stepped-up and embraced the role of the man of the house. Johns mother eventually immigrated to America, alone, in 1958 and sent for her children a year later. We always remember John saying They never knew when or if they would ever see their mom again. Fortunately John was reunited with his mom when he moved to the US in 1959 when he was around 14 years old, with his sister Chris and brother Adam. Who are here today. None of them could speak English but they worked hard to be accepted as American kids. They went to school, learned English and worked to help provide a living for their small family. 
After high school John relocated to California and started working for Western Airlines before being bought out by Delta Airlines. From cleaning toilets, John moved up through the ranks and finally retiring from Delta in1994. 
From California, John then settled in San Antonio and started investing in residential real estate in the late1980s. The rest is history 
Young at heart, we all know how John loved the holidays. 
Especially Christmas with Uvaldo.

The ornaments - tons of them, 
Wreaths, flowers, statues and then there was the glitter. For months afterwards. glitter. 
In fact, in July you could be sitting by the pool and when you got up you would have glitter on your forehead or arm or places you never imagined glitter could be. John would just roll his eyes 
But he loved every twinkling light, every colorful ornament they purchased on their travels, and especially sharing the holidays with all their friends. 
While we will miss our dear friend John we can delight in knowing he welcomed all of us into to his wonderful life. And if there is a beautiful after-life, he will be there smiling and waiting to greet us at the gate. 
As John once said, On the train of life you move on down the tracks. Some people get on the train and some people get off the train. And at the end of the line the people still on the train are the ones that are meant to be in your life.'

'I will never forget John. I worked with him at Western and Delta and had so much fun. He was such a kind, compassionate and caring person to everyone. He was so 
talented in so many ways. He made this world much richer for all of us who new him. May God Bless Him.'

'Kind, caring, good humored, a gentleman....my fond memories of John during our many years of working together at Western Airlines at LAX. We shared a special bond of our Polish heritage and I feel his loss deeply, even though I have not seen John for many years. My deepest condolences to his family and and to Uvaldo. Heaven, I believe, just got a little bit nicer. Rest peacefully John, knowing you will be greatly missed.'
