

John was a young teenager when he immigrated to the U.S. in 1959. Having grown up in Boston, Massachusetts, John later moved to California working as an agent for Western and Delta Airlines. In the 1980s, John relocated to San Antonio as an investor in real estate and property management.
John's community service was focused on education and equal rights issues. He was a contributing founder to the LGBTQ Scholarship Fund at the University of Texas, San Antonio, and contributed to a variety of local and national gay and lesbian based organizations.
John will be remembered as a kind, compassionate and generous man who welcomed everyone. He leaves behind his life partner of 14 years, Ubaldo Torres, Jr.; sister, Krystyna Deschambeault of East Conway, New Hampshire; brother, Adam Szetela of Newton, Massachusetts; niece, Ann-Marie Knox and family of Freedom, New Hampshire; nephews, Adam Szetela, Jr. of Kansas City, Missouri and Travis Szetela of Needham, Massachusetts; Uncle Louie Kumor of Plymouth, Massachusetts and numerous cousins.
