John Martin Thompson, a proud Army veteran and devoted family man, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 17, 2026 in San Antonio, Texas. He leaves behind a legacy of service, faith, and friendship that will be remembered by all who knew him. He was born September 17, 1968 in San Angelo, Texas to Sandra Jeanne Conrad and Richard Lee Thompson.
John honorably served his country in the United States Army for 22 years, retiring after a distinguished career. During his service, he proudly held roles as both a combat medic and an Army Ranger - positions that reflected his courage, discipline, and commitment to others. His dedication to protecting and serving never wavered, and he carried the values of the Army with him throughout his life. After retirement he continued working as an armed security guard protecting those in his community.
Outside of his military service, John found joy in spending time at the shooting range, and homesteading were some of the passions he pursued. He also was a long time follower of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Faith played an important role in John’s life. He was an active participant in the Royal Rangers organization at First Assembly of God San Antonio, where he dedicated time to mentoring, fellowship, and service within his church community.
He was preceded in death by his parents. John is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, JoAnn Thompson; his four sons, Zachary, Jon, Joshua, and Jacob Thompson; his sister, Marcia Baker and her husband Jeff; aunt, Marty Laughery and a lifetime of friends who were blessed to know him.
