From one parent to another and as a mother of a USMarine my son SSgt R. Hernandez is scheduled to report to Afghanistan in Feb 2011.

When those Marines knock on your door to tell you the impossible news about your baby, your lives are forever changed. For I know that feeling, my precious son, Cpl. Steven P. Gill, USMC died in Iraq on 21 July 2005. I know your pain close up.Know that we will always remember our heroes like Jorge and Steven for keeping us free here is the USA. As the saying goes Freedom Isn't Free!! 
From experience, please try and eat and sleep. Don't let people borrow money or ask for a hand out, it happened to me and much was taken and stolen from me. There are many predators in this world and they prey on hurting families. There is a support group of Gold Star Parents that meets in San Antonio, please email me if you would like more information. We have all lost sons at war and we provide much comfort for each other. Right now you are trying to just get through the day, moment by 
moment. My prayers to you both and to your extended families. 
As the final stanza of the Marine Corps Hymn states, "the streets of heaven are guarded by United States Marines!"

Rest in peace JV. Rest among loved ones that anxiously been expecting you. Smile upon those left behind. You brought your family, friends, and country pride and joy through out your life. We know that heaven needed a strong, and brave soldier to protect and watch down on us. 
 As a kid your laughter and mischief runs through my mind. Your big sister affectionately referred to you as "her papa head" and you would kick her and run off. I would laugh at the sight of you riding your bike recklessly up and down the street blasting your water gun or throwing rocks with your friends. Every flood we knew you were up to no good in the water creek behind grandma's house. Holidays that I spend with your family were fun because all you wanted to do was wrestle. 
 I recall being amazed at how small -yet strong you were. You would do scary leaps off of your aunt's roof top on to her trampoline just to show us you could. I never got the chance to really get to know you as an adult- but am proud I got to spend time with you as a child. You were very bright. A little man is how I use to think of you. Now- I think of you as a brave and caring Angel. God Bless you and Rest in Peace. Forever in our minds and hearts as our Brave and Fearless Hero up in Heaven.

I am the head football coach at Broadway High School, located in Virginia. Each week this season, our football team will play in honor of a fallen soldier. This week, we will be playing for Jorge. Our team considers this a great honor. Jorge's acts of bravery deserve a fitting tribute. Our players will play very hard tonight and we hope to make Jorge and his family proud. I hope you find comfort knowing that Jorge's life continues to inspire others... even a small town football team in Virginia. Thanks!

The Final Salute

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Marine Jorge Villarreal our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Jorge. And to Jorge it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Jorge, you are a brave Marine Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.
