Joe was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin to Delores and Cletus Holtermann on the 16th December 1950. For the first seven years of his life, he grew up on his paternal (Holtermann) grandparent’s farm, with his best friend (dog) Fritz. He went to school and graduated from high school in Green Bay, before joining the Air Force to become an Aerospace Ground Equipment Superintendent. From a young age he had a love of reading many genres of books and other forms of literature, listening to classical and jazz music, along with several other forms of art including plays, musicals, and operas. He also found it highly entertaining to visit museums, learn about animals at the zoo and aquariums, plus travel to and become educated about historical sites.
Joe greatly enjoyed hiking, even if it was off the beaten path where he could have a nice picnic in nature, listen to the radio, or read while peacefully relaxing outdoors. His love of reading, exploring nature, and his appreciation of education and art continued throughout his life. He met and married Barbara in Las Vegas, Nevada and they had a life together for over twenty years. Joe graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale College of Engineering & Technology.
He was a veteran of Vietnam and his service in the Air Force allowed him to live in Bentwaters, England; Minot, North Dakota; and Moreno Valley, California where he retired as a Senior Master Sargent. During his service he was also able to travel to Germany, France, Italy, and other countries overseas as well as within the United States to visit many historical sites and fascinatingly beautiful art museums.
Upon moving to San Antonio, Texas Joe continued his favorite hobbies of cooking and inventing new delicious meals, visiting the library to find new interesting books and music, plus going hiking to explore national and regional parks. In his retirement, he was able to enjoy his favorite “job” of being a Grandpa as he loved telling stories of his travels and relaying life lessons to his grandchildren and loved ones alike. He was a generous and kind man who loved God, his family, learning, and took pride in his daughter and grandchildren’s education and happiness!
Joe is survived by his daughter Beckie Rain Sicarius Shea, his grandchildren, Tyler Sicarius and Schuyler Shea, his siblings and their spouses including his sister Joanne (Nate) Carlton, plus his four brothers John (Vicki) Holtermann, Jerry (Laurie) Holtermann, Roland “Rollie” Holtermann, and Larry (Gwen) Holtermann.
A committal service for Joseph will be held on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209.
Memorials may be given by lighting a candle, sending flowers, or by reaching out to his daughter Beckie.
The family of Joe wishes to extend our sincere thanks to family friend and neighbor Helen Hernandez for being the best and kindest neighbor a person could ask for.
