Josephine G. Melonson

Josephine Gordon Melonson, born May 9, 1931 in Wharton, Texas to parents Elie & Missouri Gordon. She was the fourth of five children. Josie attended Wharton Public schools, graduated (valedictorian). She continued her education at Prairie View A & M University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Education, in January 1954.

On June 1, 1954 she married her college sweetheart, Allen F. Melonson, in Wharton, Texas. To this union two children were born, Allan Gordon and Darryl Mark.

Josephine began her teaching career at St. Leo’s Catholic school in 1963 and continued with SAISD until 1989, when she retired.

Josephine was a faithful member of Jacobs Chapel United Methodist church. She served on various committees within the church. She was also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, Alpha Tau Omega Chapter.

Josephine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother William (Willie), sisters Emma, Ruby, and granddaughter Misty. She is survived by her brother Eli, her sons, Allan (Teri), Darryl; granddaughters Chloe’ and Kayla; and great-grandson Kendall.
