She was a member of the Northern Hills United Methodist Church. She was active in the United Methodist Women organization and the Retired Teachers Association. She retired from San Antonio Independent School District after influencing the lives of High School and Middle School children for over 30 years.
Joy is survived by her husband, Burl J. Heaton; daughter, Amy Dockery and husband Dan; grandson, Cody Dockery; sisters, Mary Spears, Maureen Headrick and Betty Johnson; and brothers, Simon Purvis and Jerry Purvis.
Service will be held on Wednesday, July 1, 2015, at 12:00 Noon at Northern Hills United Methodist Church, 3703 N.E. Loop 1604 East. Interment will follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Retired Teachers Association Scholarship Fund, ATTN: A. Sefcik, 6 Bridgenorth Lane, San Antonio, TX 78218 (SAARTA Scholarship Fund).
