I went to school in Pound, Virginia. The school house burned down and I joined the Navy at the age of 17. I served in the European and Pacific Theaters; after the war, I returned to Virginia in 1946 and then migrated to Texas. I served an apprenticeship at the Local Sheet Metal Union turning out as a sheet metal mechanic in 1950. Then I rejoined the Navy, while in the Navy I met and married Vada Jean Ross from San Antonio, TX.
After serving in Korea, I returned to San Antonio and worked as a sheet metal worker. I worked in Point Barrow, Alaska in 1956. In 1957 I returned to San Antonio and worked as a sheet metal worker; in 1963 I opened my own sheet metal and roofing company "BENTLEY SHEET METAL AND ROOFING CO, INC." with what pocket change I had. In 1967 I was lucky enough to be the roofing contractor for the Tower of America.
The roofing and sheet metal trade was very good to me and my family. Bentley Sheet Metal and Roofing Co., Inc still operates today, under the same name as it did 46 years ago. It is operated by my son, Ted Bentley.
I was preceded in death by my loving wife of 56 years, Vada Jean Ross Bentley; brother, Bathus Lee Bentley; and sister, Irene Johnson.
I am survived by my sisters-in-law, Ruby Bentley, Robbie Jo and husband, Bob Teaff, brothers-in-law, Stanley Ross and wife Mary Lou, Johnnie Ross and Colin Ross; children, Patsy and Rick Davis, Ted and Susan Bentley, Barbara and Emmett Chapman, Zada and Fred Cisneros, Zona and Ronnie Allen; 19 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; and Stella Anderson a very dear, loving and devoted friend.
