

June Rosalie Schmillen Bernhard of Boerne passed away quietly Tuesday the 14th of November surrounded by family at the Vitas Hospice in San Antonio, Texas. She had recently suffered several strokes and had congestive heart failure. June was born the only child of Anthony Christopher Schmillen and Edyth Thelma Cushman June 22, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois. Raised in South Chicago, she graduated from Bowen High School, Chicago, in 1941 and then worked for United States Steel until her marriage to Leon Cornelius Bernhard USN on June 28, 1943 in Chicago. They were blessed with six children, four sons, and two daughters who died in infancy. Proud of her Pilgrim ancestry, she was the 7th great granddaughter of Rev. Thomas Cushman, First Elder of Plymouth.
She lived in Chicago; Blue Island, Illinois; Darby, Pennsylvania; Norfolk, Virginia; and Sauk Village, Illinois. In 1963, upon Leon’s retirement from the Navy they settled in North Las Vegas, Nevada and later lived in Las Vegas until 2004, when she moved to Cypress, Texas; and finally to Boerne in 2016.
A long time member of Cavalry Baptist Church, Chicago, Deaconess of First Baptist Church, Las Vegas, and Fellowship Baptist Church, Las Vegas, Nevada. After moving to Texas, She became a member of Heritage Presbyterian Church in Cypress, Texas; and finally Curry Creek Baptist Church, Boerne, TX. Long involved in charitable work in Las Vegas, she also served as a Cub Scout Den Mother for many years. She cherished her extended family and travelled extensively to visit them, sometimes to far away destinations such as Guam, Hawaii, Honduras, Germany, and Japan. She worked for Bernhard-Williams Photography of Las Vegas for twenty years and for the Clark County School District.
June loved making hand made crafts for her family and friends. A cheerful handmade card, crocheted blanket, or plastic canvas was always a welcome gift from her creative hands.
Preceded in death by her parents, husband Leon, long time companion, Rupert Eden, daughters Sharanne Lee and Bonnie Lou, daughter-in-law Rebecca Bernhard, granddaughter Carolyn June Bernhard, and a great grandson. Survived by sons Lee, Colorado Springs CO; Lynn (Leara), Taylorsville, UT; Gary (Trish) Bulverde, TX; and Larry (Elaine) Boerne, TX; twenty-three grandchildren, and fifty-two great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Currey Creek Baptist Church, 35 Cascade Road; Boerne, Texas 78015 on February 17, 2018 at 2:00PM. Cremation arranged by Sunset North Funeral Home, San Antonio.
