

Kathryn Faye Simmons was born on May 12, 1945 in Harrisburg, Illinois. She was the daughter of Josephine Moore and James Phillips. She moved to Chicago, Illinois where she graduated high school and married James Simmons. Five children were born to their union. Kathryn moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico where she received a degree in Sociology from New Mexico State University. Among her many accomplishments, she was most proud of learning to swim and would often joke that she had to move to the desert in order to learn to swim. Kathryn will forever be remembered by her beloved brothers Willard and Larry Moore of Indiana; her sister-in-law, Patricia Moore; her loving sons James, Gemase and Justice Simmons; her devoted daughter Veronica Walker and husband Eugene; daughter-in-law Roveta Simmons; her treasured 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren, along with countless other family and friends who were blessed to know her. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Anita Taylor, her brothers James (Joyce) and Richard Stone, and her daughter Renee Torain (Joseph). Kathryn loved movies, listening to music and spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed reading classic literature and read it to her children until they could read to themselves. She touched many lives in her church and community with her warmth and kindness. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 5, 2012 at 2:00pm at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway. Funeral service will be held on Monday, March 5, 2012 at 3:00pm at Sunset Funeral Chapel. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
